Good psychological horror games?

The best one I've come across has been F.E.A.R. I've also played some of the Silent Hill series but that has been disapointing. That's all the psychological horror game I've played.

I also know about Eternal Darkness but can't convince myself to try it (why the #&*^ are there fourth wall breaking sanity effects?).

Anyway, what are some horror games that succeed in being good mind-screws?

You found FEAR a good horror game, but Silent Hill not?
Ehm, ok...

Anyways, I find no videogame is able to screw with my mind, so no idea.
Maybe you'll like Arkham Asylum.

Kane and Lynch had some messed up stuff, it wasn't horror, and it wont blow your mind away, but it did feel pretty fucked up what they were doing.

The two games that really managed to scare me are STALKER and Thief 3. Both amazing games and definitely worth your time.

Of course, the Silent Hill series.
My undies might never dry up again.

Other one would be Fatal Frame, and even Vampire the Masqarade:Bloodlines has its fair share of scary missions.

Any of the Fatal Frame games and Silent Hill 2.
I just beat Silent Hill 2 and I'll give the story praise but the atmosphere just didn't have any effect on me.

As for Fatal Frame I just can't get exited about the idea of fighting ghosts with a camera.

F.E.A.R. used many in-game scares while Silent Hill does not. The atmosphere in Silent Hill 2 and 3 was pretty samey and bland all the way through.

Actually Silent Hill 3 did, in fact, have its moments.

Silent Hill 2's only real strength was it cut-scenes. They were awesome though.

I disagree slightly. They weren't that mind messing. Doesn't stop it being a fantastic game though. It's on my Top 5 Games list, aswell as many other Top lists.

Man, I've played that game 8 or 9 times in the past 3 and a half years. I know where everything is. (And I mean EVERYTHING).

Feel free to ask me any reasonable question on it and not an idiotic question like, how many enemies are there exactly in Chapter 3-2.

FEAR wasn't psychological horror at all...
Exactly. Just a few boring jump out scares, yawn. Good fun with the decent AI in the shootouts tho. And seriously, a little girl flicking the lights on and off or being teleported into a red, blurry corridor? Brrrr, I'm terrified now! Oh wait, I'm a psychic supersoldier with more guns than Belgium, so no I'm not. :\

Rule of Rose is plain creepy. The story makes no sense though. Perhaps that contributes to the creepiness; things don't make sense, which scares me.

There is an indie game called, The Path. It's not really a mainstream horror game per se but it is very much a cerebral fear inducing game. The premise and execution is very...eerie, to say the least.

I would also say Thief: Deadly Shadows for one particularly terrifying level. The Shalebridge Cradle *shudder*. It's rumored to be one of the scariest missions in the video game history.

Yes, I did enjoy the dark story of Masquerade, shame about the game breaking bugs and about a 2/5ths of it being completely unplayable :D

Anyway, OT:

Stalker with some of the really good patches installed. Such as the EXTREME NIGHT version that made the night almost completely pitch black, hearing the sounds of various mutants around me while running for some form of shelter with a couple of friendly stalkers to bed down for the night in while I was bleeding out due to a bullet I took a while back. My desperate rasps for air as I stumbled towards the fireplace and the other stalkers.

I'll never forget the modded version of stalker, such a fantastic game.

I suppose call of cthultu is worth a mention, as are the penumbra games.
