You see I have been a console gamer since the days of Sega and I would really like a change of gaming atmosphere. So I am looking at computers. I hear that they are one of the only ways to go for good gaming. Unfortunatly I am not made of money and was wondering if there are good computers out there that are cheap and can hold a few good games, if nothing else. Im not looking for graphics, I could care less, I usually put all settings on low for the computer I have when playing Team Fortress 2. Even then it stil lags.

Someone asked what my limite for cost is and that is around $600-$630

You do want a computer that is able to run recent games at a high resolution with high graphics because if you don't, next year you'll have to buy more expensive parts to be able to play new games.

Would getting a better graphics card help?

Whoever told you that PC was the only way to go for gaming lied to you horribly. You are basically paying extra money and going through extra inconveniences for the same game library (Except for a few juicy console exclusives) of games but with clunky mouse and KB controls.

Mouse and Keyboard controls are clunky? Maybe for racing games and flying games, but for FPS games and strategy games Mouse-n-Keyboard controls are absolutely godlike. Plus, there are tons of excellent PC-exclusive games if you're willing to play more than just stuff released in the last five years. And then when you factor in mods for existing games, not at least stepping foot into PC gaming is truly a terrible decision if you ask me.

Although, I do have to agree with you that PC-gaming is not the only way to go, as it's a hell of a lot more costly than Console-gaming, it still isn't something to pass up completely, however.

I can't agree with this. I've always found mouse and Keyboard controls to be superior to a controller. It's all preference though. I was weened on the classic PC games so that's what I prefer now. Console's are good fun though.

On topic though...

You certainly can build a really nice desktop for a pretty fair price but I decided to go with a laptop. I got mine for 900 bucks and it runs crysis on high very well. I know that for a little less I could run it even better on a desktop but whatever, I just really like laptops.

To each their own.

Starting from scratch and making a good computer based on your needs is the best thing for you

Its cheaper then you think. Just go to best buy and buy any name brand PC with a good graphics card. Think ati 4870 or better. Use your old Monitor and dont buy the package deal. Your whole bill should be less then $1000 and thats cheaper then a PS3 and a matching quality hdtv.

Ohh, welcome to the wonderful world of PC gaming! If you build your own, remember to set the boot device correctly, confused me for about an hour until I worked it out.

Also, go for a good motherboard (plenty of expansion space for RAM and the like). It's a part I dislike upgrading, so having one that lasts a while is good. Even if you don't use up all the RAM slots, expanding later can often be a big improvement in speed.

And if you like messing with stuff, things get even better. Always resented consoles for not letting you fuck about with graphics settings and even BIOS settings? well now you can! And if you don't like it, you can always just stick to the simple options and not touch the BIOS

Good luck, and god speed to you.

I agree that sometimes it is best to start from scratch. The bad news, is that some of the parts can be kind of fragile and if you screw it up that's a little counterproductive to what you're trying to do (save some cash).

My brother and I get our stuff from http://www.newegg.com/

You could always just buy a mediocre desktop and then kind of upgrade it as you went along. Get more memory when you need it, etc.

Give us an estimate of how much you have to spend and I'm sure some of us'll have a look for you or give you pointers.

More like console gamers are paying extra money to have crappy controls and graphics. I teehee'd myself when I saw how DAO played on consoles, made me glad I buy everything on pc.
