Good Rpgs on pc?

And what about the actual Gothic 4 - ArcaniA? I've not actually played it, since I remember hearing unkind things about it, but I can't remember what or where I heard them. There is another bundle on Gamer's Gate that has both Gothic and ArcaniA in it, it's £10.

No idea, I haven't played Arcania. But it's got nothing to do with Gothic besides having the word printed on the box art, and a few cameo appearances of characters. No one treats it as canon, though, and most Gothic/Risen players including myself simply disregard it. From the little I have seen, it seems extremely mediocre. Very dumb-downed, half-arsed RPG lite. Since the rites of the Gothic franchise have returned to Piranha Bytes, no future Arcania games will be allowed to have the word Gothic anyway. Whether an actual, official Gothic 4 will ever be made by Piranha Bytes remains to be seen. I think they're content with letting the series be put to rest, since Risen is more or less Gothic in all but name anyway.

I hope that jumbled mess makes sense.

Mass Effect
(1, 2 & 3 - yes 3's ending was considered to be objectively bad but the entire series is still worth playing)

Started Mass Effect and I hated it, I have no idea why but i just could not get into it...I know I'm like one of
the three people who feel like that.

Was it the story or the game play you didn't like because I was going to suggest mass effect and I WOULD suggest the other bioware games KOTOR, and Dragon Age but if you don't like the game play they are similar UIs because they are all Bioware. They are worth trying though because they have great stories. Oh and Mass effect 2 has a much better UI than 1 did as well

Two worlds 2 is a good game
Skyrim and the other Elder Scroll games are brilliant, skyrim had me addicted
The witcher is quite good

Some of the older games like Icewind Dale and Neverwinters Nights are really worth it if you like D&D type games

Not really sure, I think it was controls or maybe I just wasn't in a gaming mood when I picked it up, I've heard nothing but good things and should really give them another try. I loved both KOTOR's, DA however was so-so imo. It felt like the same thing I had played 100 times and didn't grab me as much as I thought it would.

Bleeeeh, really? I found the controls in Gothic 1 made that game unplayable for me, which soured me on the rest of the series as they sit in my Steam library. Do those get any better in the sequels + Risen?

Controls in the first game are very strange indeed. I'm happy to say they are much better in the rest of the series. In Risen, the controls are pretty standard. Nothing out of the ordinary, so it's very easy to just slip right in and get to grips right away. Gothic II's controls are probably the best they've come up with, the melee combat is insanely fun once you've spent an hour or two getting used to it. Gothic 3's controls, once you've got the game patched all up, is also highly enjoyable, though flawed. Risen II is where it starts getting fucking strange again. The simplicity of Risen I is lost, and the combat is difficult to get to terms with. Risen II was enjoyable for me once I started getting some skills and shit, but the opening hours weren't exactly enjoyable by any means due to the controls. Piranha Bytes is rather weird like that, they keep changing shit, and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

Have to say I had EXACTLY the same experience with DA when I first played it (not long before Skyrim came out actually) and it left me feeling bored, yay another Tolkin clone. Even considered not buying number 2 because the first bored me so much. Went back and started playing it again a couple of weeks ago and my opinion is the complete opposite, I am loving it now. That could be because now I have been playing other things, I don't stick to JUST RPGs anymore so I have just come off playing Spec Ops and am halfway through Bioshock infinite rather than just coming off playing Ultima 7 and Si again

I've only played Gothic 3 and it's freaking massive, very very buggy game though. Had to quit midway because of a weird game breaking bug even with the latest community patches. Apart from that, one of the best rpg experiences I had.
I'd also recommend Risen 1 though. It's a bite-sized Gothic spin-off and a great RPG overall. The fighting system can be exploited easily but, let's be honest, all real time combat RPGs have flawed fighting systems.

As for Arcanum I don't know, I'm still trying to get into it. It's a promising game with a unique setting but very clunky..
I'd definetely recommend Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines though. It's definitely one of those games that you have to play before you die.

So,Im kinda at a stand still and looking for a good rpg to play. Ive played planescape,Baldurs gate 1&2 ,Dungeon Siege 1&2,Dark souls and Legend of Grimrock, Along with many others...so im kinda at a stand still any suggestions?

some top picks:

the witcher 2 (rpg fantasy/medieval) - truly excellent, do every quest soak in the atmosphere and pick whatever options you like, there are very few wrong ones.

the elder scrolls skyrim (dragon fantasy/medieval/quest rpg) - EXTREMELY large. almost gamebreakingly so. plenty of quests and far too many distractions but that's great because you get a unique experience.

deus ex human revolution (tech/cyber rpg) - good techno / cyber futuristic fun, but not too deep beyond the general premise of the game.

the longest journey, oldschool. 2D point'n'click find all the puzzles progress through about 20/25 hours of content



Action rpg:

torchlight 2, heavy on action light on rpg.



more 'shooty' options:

fallout3 / new vegas (post apocalyptic/quest/rpg) i'm not a fan of desolation.. but i still found the ruined vistas of fallout quite compelling.

borderlands 2, more of an action/rpg/shooter but still, you have a unique character, weapons and hundreds of quests to do.

farcry 3, + blooddragon. good game, bit liner but plenty of options and collectables + open world retro techno stupididty dlc.. very fun.

metro last light, this one is borderline, it's technically a linear shooter game with a couple of rpg-esque elements but it's a great experience, it's a must-have but only when it goes on sale because of it's far too short length ( imo )



I do not recommend mass effect, it has terrible shooty mechanics ( or my character class sucked.. ) it ruined the game entirely for me because i couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. you may fare better if you pick a better class. but i gave up after dragging my sorry useless ass through the campaign once.

halfway through Bioshock infinite

I love the Bioshock games, Though Infinite has too be my least favorite of the 3 it was way to straight forward action for me, Run in shoot everything move to the next area and there was way to few plasmids/salts imo.

Besides the Gothic trilogy, you may want to check out the spiritual successor and what I consider to be a Gothic 4 in all but name. Risen. Angry Joe gave it a thrashing in his review, but that was for the Xbox version, so I have no idea what that's like. PC version is just fine though. You should especially check out Risen if you enjoy Gothic II. I'd stay away from Risen II though. It wasn't terrible, I had fun with it, but it feels definitely lacking for a Piranha Bytes game, and the shady DLC practices are a definite sour note.

No, Risen on PC is just as terrible as it's console counterpart. I'd recommend staying away.

The mechanics of that game are straight up BROKEN. And not the good kind. They gie you a shield and tell you that you can press a button to block with it. What they DON'T tell you is that shields are nigh useless since almost EVERYTHING can break your block in a single strike. Seriously, how does a single fucking WOLFE get past a buckler shield?

Mix in very vague and unclear directions when it comes to questing, magic that takes a horrendously long time to get access to and is graphically and mechanically underwhelming, it's just not a pretty picture.

I tried my hardest to like Risen despite it's flaws, but the flaws are just too numerous and glaring.

Brillant games, best is 7 part 1 and 2, 8 is ok and 9 is disappointing, and if you want to play it make sure you get the patches because it crashes like a *****!!!!!!!!

Its worth playing the older games but they are OLD school, ie the early ones if you don't have food, you die. They came on 5 inch floppy so don't expect super graphics. I say this so your not expecting skyrim graphics because they didn't exist when these games were made but they are some of the best RPGs ever made

nope, nothing to do with your aim, the guns are simply appallingly inaccurate. I point, it shoots elsewhere.. nuf said..
I had the engineer class, with the little zappy probe. ( I liked the little zappy probe. ) so I guess my character just had a poor aim value or something.

Do I need to play them in any order or are they stand alone? I looked em up on GoG when I saw your post they are actually pretty cheap.

its not stand alone like Final fantasy is where the stories are compleatly separate but you should be able to play them separately (wouldn't play 9 first), they are the same world and you are the same person and the stories follow on from each other but there is not a huge barrier to entry between games, except the last 4.

If you don't want to play them all I would just watch this up to the first game you want to play

you should, it's old and it was never really pretty to begin with but it's a fantastic world with great characters.

also it lets you cheat and then tells you you're cute for doing it

it has a fantastic community that generate semi-official patches for it, even this long after release
( remixing events, making the animations and game flow smoother, ect )

you'll want to be very careful how you pick your first character or you'll end up dead very quickly, it is not forgiving at all. it's a proper oldschool hardocre game.

also.. don't be silly and pick the insane one first, you won't be able to see the dialogue.

Well if someone is going to go as far back as the Ultima games then try Betrayal At Krondor (available on GoG).

Graphically it's quite pixilated but the story, combat and world are fun to explore. You may need help with a walkthrough in chapter 3 though.
