Hey, escapists, I was wondering what good RPGs are on steam? I would like to get them under 25$, but I am willing to pay more.
So does anyone know some good rpgs on steam they can refer me to?

My brother recently downloaded Fallouts 1 & 2, which he says are quite fun. Maybe try those, if turn-based combat doesn't bother you.

I second the Fallout games. Also Morrowind, and maybe The Witcher, though it isn't to everyone's taste.

Fallouts 1 and 2
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Torchlight
Reccetear: An Item Shop's Tale
Knights of the Old Republic
Mount and Blade: Warband
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2

Not all of those are under $25, but they are all pretty good.

2nd. This is a great RPG, it's a shame the company went bankrupt.
I'll back this one was well. I would point out that, mechanically at least, the game suffers from most of the same "problems" as Alpha Protocol, with the single exception that there is a plausible (within the fiction) explanation for magical occurrences (which is simply that magic is a thing just like vampires and werewolves).

I've played a lot of the RPGs in Steam and the Mass Effect games are excellent. Arx Fatalis is awesome, but it is dated.

Dragon Age, Vampire The Masquerade & The Witcher I have heard nothing but good things and have yet to play them, but they are on my list. :)

I would recommend Arx Fatalis if you are a regular fan of RPGs. It has all of the good elements and very few of the bad.

There will be Magicka soon (wednesday 26th Jan 2011). That should be pretty cool one. Especially if you have 3 friends to coop with!

3rded. Unlike Alpha Protocol you aren't forced to be an unlikable douchebag though. Unofficial patches are needed and probably work with steam versions but you may want to verify that. Otherwise KOTOR is on Steam and the Diamond Edition of Neverwinter Nights. The original campaign for NWN is a bit naff but bearable, however the Shadows of Undrentide expansion is much better.

Not on Steam but at the much better Good Old Games (www.gog.com) are Planescape: Torment (best story in a computer game), Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 (The bench mark for RPGs) The Fallouts and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. (NWN is availabe from GOG as well as Steam so you are better off getting it there)

You are however forced to do things while knowing full well that you're being played even when an obvious solution is available. The game is fantastic on most grounds (aside from some really awful animations clipping problems) including the narrative but I never did like how I would be forced to jump through hoops doing nonsense for a character in order to do something else they wanted me to do but was actually directly related to the quest that sent me there in the first place.

Also, playing the game a second time around as a Malkavian is quite enjoyable. While it wouldn't have been obvious on the first playthrough, it turns out this character is quite a bit more aware of the true nature of a situation than any of the rest.

I can't recommend Risen enough. Fantastic, fantastic game - on the PC. Not so much on 360...

Jade Empire, if you haven't played it; heck, anything by Bioware will do.

Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga is good, but expensive right now. And whatever you do, don't go for just Ego Draconis - the game ends halfway through the storyline, and the expansion contains the rest of the story. Fortunately, Saga contains both parts.

As octafish said, Good Old Games can't be beaten for ... old RPGs. It has pretty much everything Black Isle related.
