Well the only good R.P.Gs are J.R.P.GS with the exceptions of Bioware's work (fallout 3 is a fps with R.P.G elements)

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic.
It's a fantastic experience all around, with great characters, an interesting story, and you get lightsabers.

Get Titan Quest, I believe you can still get it and the expansion for $5 from Direct2Drive.

Onyx Oblivion

Borderlands Addict. Again.

You can't hate the entire JRPG genre without reason, what games did you play that made you hate it?

For WRPGs: Jade Empire is awesome. Bioware's best work.

Any Bioware game works, specially since you like Mass Effect. Both KoTOR games, Jade Empire, Baldur's Gate, etc.

Neverwinter Nights stick very closely to the DnD formula and it works well.

I've been playing Risen recently, though only for a few hours, but I like what I'm seeing so far.

Mount and Blade. Good fun, as long as you don't implode from the graphics not being ZOMGCRYSIS.

Fable and Fable 2, plus the games said here.
Also, if you don't like JRPGs, try Lost Odyssey, that changed my mind about them.

Fallout 1&2

Baldur's Gate 1&2&Throne Of Bhaal (Tales of the Sword Coast is a nice extra but doesn't add to the main storyline)
Throne of Bhaal expansion doesn't have the storytelling quality of the two main games, but I recommend it because it completes the main saga and brings some interesting items and abilities to the core BG2. And never fear, there are a ton of mods for both games, so the fun doesn't end with just the official releases.

Planescape:Torment. A must have. Honestly. Get the mod for better graphics. (core game works only in 640x480 (and possibly 800x600) if unmodded.) The storyline and dialogues are one of the best ones out there, despite the game being about 10 years old. The writing and the plot just that brilliant.

StarWars: Knights Of The Old Republic 1&2. The first one is better in all but game mechanics, 2nd is nice once modded but even then it is a bit half-finished story-wise.

Jade Empire

Titan Quest + exp for a more Diablo kind action-RPG. For a blend of Baldur's Gate and Diablo II, go for Icewind Dale 2; uses the same Infinity Engine that Baldur's Gate II does, but quests are more combat oriented.

Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask Of The Betrayer expansion. The first NWN is fairly nice with expansions, but I feel the 2nd one is superior in all aspects and Mask Of The Betrayer storyline is just plain awesome.

Vampire The Masquerade:Bloodlines

That pretty much fills it, that list is almost all western RPGs I consider to be of good/excellent quality.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura (love the full titel) isn't been named yet I see. It's graphics aren't woopy-doo, even for a 2001 game (Planescape: Torment was released in 1999 and looks way better) but role-play was it's brilliant. Also it's one of the few good games featuring steampunk.

The Witcher is apparently also pretty good, but I wouldn't know for sure.

I actually really enjoyed Wild Arms 3 too, and I think Persona 3/4 are some of the best JRPGs (or even just regular RPGs) ever made. But, since you want non-JRPGs...

Elder Scrolls (Morrowind is better than Oblivion except in polish and tech)
BG 1/2
Fallout 3
THE WITCHER! -- Seriously, this is a great non-J RPG. In fact, it's really very anti-cookie cutter. Highly recommended.
