Well the only good R.P.Gs are J.R.P.GS with the exceptions of Bioware's work (fallout 3 is a fps with R.P.G elements)

You are stating an opinion as a fact. In general, JRPG's play very differently from non,you like them others don't. So, you could remove some of your pretentiousness from your post :p

OT: Look at borderlands, if you like FPS's.
Okay fine, there are other good R.P.Gs out there, I suppose, if you're into that J.R.R.Tolkien kind of shit.
Wow the pretentiousness is back with a vengeance I could do the same, but I'm better than you. Ha! See what I did there?
Yeah, it blew my mind!

Demon Souls for the PS3. Made by a Japanese dev, but it plays very much like a western style rpg. It has quickly become one of my fav games. Just be warned, this game is not for the faint of heart. The difficulty can be very brutal, but it really is a crazy fun game.

I never really play any outside of MMORPG's. Otherwise its just pointless grind.

Perfect World is my "RPG" of choice.
Wait, did you just claim that non MMORPGS are "pointless grinds"???

What on earth is an MMORPG then?

If you don't mind outdated graphics, I can whole heartedly recommend the Might&Magic series. The seventh is my personal favorite, and arguably the last good one.

BARD'S TALE, BARD'S TALE, BARD'S TALE!

I'm afraid if I suck that game's cock any harder it'll fall off, so I'll just say it was done by some of the same guys behind the original Fallout games, it plays like a great Dungeon Crawler, and it is genuinely funny.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura (love the full titel) isn't been named yet I see. It's graphics aren't woopy-doo, even for a 2001 game (Planescape: Torment was released in 1999 and looks way better) but role-play was it's brilliant. Also it's one of the few good games featuring steampunk.

The Witcher is apparently also pretty good, but I wouldn't know for sure.
Is there ANY chance you know of a magical location where I might find this bountious treasure? I've looked bloody everywhere for it (except eBay. I'm not paying sixty quid for a game that's already been installed on another person's computer and is missing the manual...)

Also, Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines. Patch it. Play it. Love it. Seriously, it's near unplayable without patches.

Fable and Fable 2, plus the games said here.
Also, if you don't like JRPGs, try Lost Odyssey, that changed my mind about them.
I'm gonna have to agree with Slash here, though I didn't like Lost Odyssey THAT much. The Fables were, despite their flaws, nice little ditties to play.

Was Jade Empire brought to PC? If so, that. One of Bioware's more overlooked works, though that's not saying much. The combat and the setting really made the game for me.

Folklore for the PS3 is really good, and is not JRPG.
Drakengard for the PS2 is good too, and I don't think that would qualify as JRPG. It's more like a cross between action and RPG. Either way, it's good too. xD

I recommend the following fairly recent games:

#1: "Drakensang", the biggest sleeper hit in a while. I liked it a lot, though it is fairly slow paced.

#2: "The Witcher" Decent single character game, very well crafted. I recommend only supporting the uncensored version though.

#3: "Risen" the RPG I'm currently playing, again a decent single character game, done by the guys that did Gothic.

I'm a hardcore RPG player, I don't mind JRPGs at all, but those are some of the better WRPGs I've played on the PC that you didn't mention that aren't heavily promoted.

As an aquired taste, some of the better small-house/independant PC RPGs are:

#1: The "Soldak" Duology, "Depths of Peril" and "Kivi's Underworld". Both take place in the same world. Depths of Peril is an Action RPG/Management sim hybrid that winds up being pretty good. Very surprising given the league it was developed in, I feel it got far less credit than it deserved due to being straight to the budget bin. Kivi's Underworld is the sequel and far less complex but shows better polish overall, it's even less well known as it was straight to digital release (and I would have never even looked at it if it wasn't for the first $10 boxed game).

#2: 1C, a European Developer released Planet Alcatraz, which is an interesting game, though done with a fairly low production value, and some of the most horrendous voice acting I've ever heard, combined with a truely terrible script after translation. That said reading the subtitles can get you through the game. It is kind of amusing however to see cinematics where someone punches someone else (and their arm clips through the receiving model), and where someone added in voice work saying "here, let me kick him with my leg".

Still it's a fairly original concept where you more or less play a clone of Riddick out to escape a prison planet, the RPG system is a combination of Fallout and Baldur's Gate and actually performs pretty well once you figure it out. It's just the voice/sound/cinematics are in a catagory of awful reminicent of old JRPGs.

#3: The same company above also released a game called "Star Wolves" which is a tactical RPG based around running a mercenary company of space fighters. It features an interesting if short plot, trading elements, and a decent leveling/customization system. It suffers from god awful long travel times however.

Basically I pimp these games as often as I do because I see potential with some of the developers, and given what I see as a general lack of quality RPGs I think they need the referances to hardcore fans who will support them into getting bigger products and better translations.

Truth be told a lot of my favorite PC based RPG series of all times are older than you can easily find. If your just starting PC gaming you'd probably be less impressed than by the indy efforts above (which actually are pretty good). Of them I'd think some like "Baldur's Gate" stood up well, as have "Knights Of The Old Republic" (I & II) with their PC translations, and a few others.

With massive patching Neverwinter Nights 2 is not bad (and pretty recent), though admittedly it's mostly worthwhile for the "Mask Of The Betrayer" expansion. I'm critical of it (despite having played worse games) because it wasn't exactly programmed by newcomers/independants.

See, in general I could write a huge and scathing rant about the state of the current CRPG industry but it's pointless here. :p

Truth be told though, your best bet is to pick up like Oblivion and Fallout 3 as starting points. They have their detractors but are pretty epic in scope, well polished for the most part (despite criticisms) and can keep you busy for ages. You already mentioned checking those out.

The games I mention above are secondary to the ones already mentioned, since you see to have a general "hit list" of the best stuff for the PC over the last few years.

Hence why I pirated it, it's neigh impossible to find for me either.

Oblivion is alright if you mod it a lot, Fallout 3 is definitely a step up from Oblivion, but it's in the end more of the same. I thought The Witcher was terrible. SW:Kotor is a fantastic game, kotor2 is good but not as good. Dragon Age: Origins might be good. NWN2 was terrible until Mask of the Betrayer came out. Fallout 1 & 2, and all of those other old ones that were mentioned beforehand.

Pretty much every Bioware and Obsidian game. Borderlands and Dragon Age: Origins come out soon.

If you have a PS3, try Demons Souls. It's a japanese developed game, but plays more like a wurpeger

EDIT: I forgot to add 'The Witcher'. No character creation, but it's a brilliant game.
