Just recently I've been getting into all things WW2, notably the TV show band of brothers and the books by Steven Ambrose that they based it on. Whilst I'm not the sort of guy who gets a semi when I read the stats of a Sherman tank, I do like a bit more of a cerebral challenge than most RTS games provide. Once I'd stopped being impressed by the graphics of Company of Heroes I admitted to myself that it's no more tactical than Command and Conquer was more than ten years ago, I haven't touched it since. So I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good strategy games that feature proper tactics rather than just mouse click anphetamine frenzy. For anyone else on the lookout two great games that I've been palying recently are;

Silent Hunter 4 - A slow paced but tense submarine simulation.

Theater of War - a WW2 RTS with slightly dodgy graphics but an emphasis on tactics and tons of attention to detail.

Get the 'Commando' games (Eg. 'Commandos- Beyond the call of duty'). WW2 special where you control 4 special force soilders. Good game

Also try 'Dezadly Dozzen'. WW2 where you (again) Select 4 soilders to complete missions (3rd person but strategy)

There's a game called Sniper Elite for the PS2. Obviously, it puts an emphasis on sniping, taking gravity, breathing, wind, and heartbeat into effect when you shoot and half the time your target is moving. It takes place in the last days of WW2, but you play as an American spying on the Russians.

You should give Brothers in Arms a try too. Forces you to be careful since there's no health regeneration whatsoever during missions. At least, that's what the original is like. I didn't play the second game but the third installment is due in August I think.

I like Company of Heroes. It revived my interest in WW2. But skirmishes and multiplayer are more intense than the campaign. I guess you could up the difficulty setting or try the expansion pack (the British infantry units are pretty versatile I think).
