The Advance Wars series, but Dual Strike was too easy and I don't think Days of Ruin does a great job with continuation of the Advance Wars line. However, I don't think you'll find a better TBS series than Advance Wars. 1 and 2 are for GBA, and Dual Strike and Days of Ruin are DS titles.

Civilization 4 with the Beyond the Swords expansion pack is excellent value and one of the best TBS games out there of all time.
But it's Galactic Civilizations 2 that is amazing beyond belief and which I'd most highly recommend! A second expansion pack having recently been released for the game as well. Picture if you will a scenario where your galactic empire is slowly being pushed back by sheer numbers, seperated from you allies by dozens of star systems and seemingly without hope when on a desolate remove planet your scientists discover a strange alien technology. You immediately throw everything you've got into scientific research, forsaking even military as planet by planet your empire is crushed. And then comes the day you reveal it, a new mothership class battleship twice as large as anything else in the galaxy and custom designed with shields and weapons to counter the enemy fleets. It is sent forth and destroys the enemy before it, a juggernaut holding back the storm as you finally urge your military back into full production and soon are fielding more than a dozen of these massive machines. The enemy adapts, produces new ships with new weapon systems to counter your motherships defences, but it's too little too late and soon they are sending emmisaries that beg for peace with you. You think you've won, that this game is yours, but that is when you receive messages from your distant allies asking for aid against some new, greater evil. With trepidation you turn your fleet to face this strange and new enemy...

Alpha Centauri. It's old and basically the same as Civilization, but in space and with conflict between factions that are built on philosophical ideals rather than geographical states. Very interesting game to play if you don't mind the very dated graphics.
Civ IV (III if you have an older machine) is really great. I was hesitant to get it, I thought it might be too complex or uninteresting. When I finally bought the bullet and got it, I was amazed. After a few hours getting used to it, it will become one of your "desert island" games. Seriously, never start a game of Civ if you need sleep that night.

It's all about Europa Universalis III, if you're a strategy geek like me anyway. In no other game can you instigate wholesale genocide of the Native Americans while conquering Scandanavia as the Scottish 
EU 2 is better. III was buggy & had some of the most ugly graphics ive yet seen in a strategy game. Oh & it had no fantasia option which was my favourite part of the first 2. Though I guess they improved the management side of it somewhat so I guess that was the tradeoff

Theres also a not that long ago released TBS game that was kinda like Advanced Wars only based in a near future USA thats entered a 2nd civil war. I cant remember its name & i didnt really like it personally but its worth a try certainly.

All of the Front Mission games will satisfy. Apparently there's a remake of the 1st one out now with a bunch of new content.

I am loving me some R-type Command [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-type_command]. Makes a three hour commute to and from work seem like an hour. It's very addictive, and totally not what I expected. In fact I haven't really enjoyed turn based strategy since PS1 (I think Parasite Eve.) This is a true innovation in the genre and isn't to be missed by anyone with a PSP.
Also MoM [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Magic] was great, but I doubt you'll be able to find it without some eBay high jinx. Or, maybe it doesn't age well. The last time I played it was in 1994.

Diplomacy, get seven friends and play diplomacy, its fucking amazing. For the first two weeks of playing you wont want to think of anything else, just about strategy. And im not refering to the board game, im talking about playing through e-mail. A game can last like a month or two.
