I'm rather tired of the restrains of Windows Movie Maker so I got a copy of Adobe Premier Pro and found myself running in circles for twenty minutes trying to make any sense of it. I was wondering if anyone here would know of any good video making software, specifically things that would be useful in the creation of AMVs/music videos.

Freeware preferred, but licensed is fine too.

If you are working on windows you may be out of luck. Movie Makers is the one area where windows users have it really rough.

As of now there is work being done on a multiplatform one known as VLMC (Video Lan Movie Creator), but it's really in the alpha stages and I couldn't get it to run in windows vista.

My recommendation would have to be to stick with Adobe and try your hardest to make sense of it. Look for some tutorials on line, or switch to Linux and look for Kdenlive -- a good open source editor.

Damn. Maybe I can get VLMC to run on XP, since I haven't upgraded to 7 yet. Either that or I'll call over my local Linux buddy and have him help me figure out running this copy of Ubuntu I was given and never touched.

I tend to combine MS paint, photoshop, movie maker, and several file conversion sites together to make my videos. I can make almost anything but it takes a long time.

Just a warning: VLMC may not work at all since it's in alpha stages and just basically out there for the grabbing so the devs can figure out stability problems, and it's also very limited at the moment; but from what I gather it is already running and encoding stuff on Linux.

If you are really thinking of giving Linux a crack, switch over to Kdenlive instead as it is already loaded with good features (for an open source program) and it isn't hard to get into it.

Hope that helped.
