This is why I fear for games like Guild Wars 2, Rift, and especially Old Republic. I'm terrified that games will be released that are superior to WoW in every conceivable way, yet these games will atrophy and die simply because people are too afraid to leave the well-worn comfort of WoW for unfamiliar new territory.
Wait GW2 is going pay to play now?

I tried Rift during the beta, didn't like it.

In the small amount of time that I did play World of Warcraft, I can say that it's still better than any other MMO that has attempted to dethrone it lately.

The reason I'm not leaving WoW is because I'm established in my community, to an extent.

i have heard great things about rift but the fact is, wow has had years to address problems and polish the game. that, i feel, is the core reason why no other mmo can compete. no mmo is going to be completely perfect, right away. based on the popularity of rift so far, in a few months, once it has time to get a feel for things and polish the gameplay accordingly, i feel like i could potentially be competition for wow. right now, however, im not holding my breath

Why would someone go to a game that does the same thing, only looking prettier? But still, the whole epic-ness that it seems to drive me towards is making want to pick up the demo.
Errr... Why wouldn't they? If two things are the same, why not go with the prettier one?

Only real issue in question is if they are in fact the same, rather than the prettier one being inferior in other aspects.

Actually, no, not that I've heard. Good point. I am still worried, however, that it may not sell well in the face of other bigger games and, therefore, still fail for reasons completely unrelated to the game's actual merit.

Every new MMO that is released is called a WOW killer. All have failed (I'm looking at you, Warhammer Online). The only way WOW is going to be dethroned is if Blizzard does something stupid and brings it on themselves. There is too much of a base for people to just give it up for something else.

With the release of Rift, many players are amazed at the gameplay, graphics, and similar easy to use interface(virtually the same as WoWs). Many that I have spoken to say that it trumps WoW in every way, being avid WoW players themselves. Do you think this is the beginning of the end for the dated superhero of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft?
Hard to believe that the franchise will be toppled just because there's a better title.

If that was the case, Apple wouldn't have six different iProducts.

Three years, then Rift will go F2P just like LotRO and D&D Online.

That's my prediction. Once it hits F2P, I might check it then. Till then, I'll not let my eyes be dazzled by the honeymoon shine on this game. Let it go for a year, then see what it looks like in the mirror. That beautiful new bride will probably become a haggard old crone.

It won't kill WoW, but hopefully it'll have a small success.
I'm planning on picking up the game myself in a while. Gonna learn more about first and check some more gameplay videos before making that decision though.

It seems to me that almost everyone that claims Rift is a suckier version of WoW are people who by their own admission haven't played Rift.

Im really enjoying the game myself, it's got an interesting class system allowing many different builds, a solid endgame with plenty of things for players to do, and some good dungeon and raid content.

Im not saying it's going to kill WoW, I imagine WoW is going to do just fine regardless but I think it may well give the game some much needed competition.

I've played WoW for years, what kept me there was the PvE content as is the case for many other people, all the recent MMO releases have all gone down the road of OMFGPvPGAMEZROXXORZ and failed miserably in their ridiculous ignorance of the much larger PvE community. Im not saying I hate PvP, I play on PvP servers because it can be lots of fun but PvE is really what keeps a community coming back for more.

OMFGPvPGAMEROXXORZ = PvP game. Just in case that confused you..

Rift is a good WoW that isn't WoW. Though honestly after my 3 weeks there, it feels more like EQ2 than WoW. Not that that's a fault. EQ2 was the far superior MMO of that generation, imo, but they made a game that no one could run and no one could solo past level 5. Rift resolves a lot of those issues and borrows a lot of good ideas from many of it's predecessors.

Anyway, no it won't be dethroning WoW. WoW's too accessible both for casual players, terrible players, and people with crap computers. It also has that built in separation anxiety problem for people who would have to leave their friends/guildmates to move to a new game.

I'm not going to say its "better" cause "better" is subjective. I quit WoW a year ago since I found the direction the game was taking to be incredibly mundane (Doing the same dailies and farming ICC and no place else in both 10 and 25man), have no intention on going back, and find Rift very enjoyable.

Oh, and please don't compare it to Aion. Aion was massively misrepresented by the devs and the testers. That was a grindy, ganky, KMMO in its purest form and it failed because the western audience doesn't flock to that sort of gameplay except for the sociopaths who like killing people who can't fight back and are 30 levels below them.

WoW is a great game with a lot of depth, but no matter how amazing the game is people aren't going to stick with it forever. I like the Wind Waker but I'm not going to play it 5 billion times.

I played WoW, got a character to 85, felt satisfied with my experience with it and moved on.

WoW will never die until Blizzard pulls the plug on it. People have said the same about Aion and Warhammer Online, now no-one even talks about them. I hadn't even heard mention of Warhammer Online for years until I read the post above the reply box.
Basically, what he said.

I wouldn't say WoW is going the way of the dodo just yet. That's doomsaying.

But i will say Blizzard is probably well aware of the expected shelf life of its flagship online title, hence why they're looking to innovate and re-imagine with Titan. I have every confidence they'll be able to draw their demographic back, and i'm not just saying that as a Blizzard fanboy; they have 10 years or so of experience backing them up.

Edit: I'd also like to say, though unrelated, i'd love to try Rift but the constant news i'm hearing about hackers has me worried.

Not by a mile. The game is real shiny and that's about it. There are already some incredibly glaring problems with core gameplay seen in just the first day from all I've heard. It doesn't have the Blizzard name behind it, nor the power of previous success of franchise behind it either.
And why is Blizzard such an important name to have on an MMO? WoW was their first go at the genre, and there were TONS of glaring problems with it at launch. Far more than RIFT has now.

I think it's also to Trion's benefit that there are no previous games in the franchise. It just means there's no backstory/lore to ruin like WoW did.

OT: Nothing will kill WoW, nor is there a need for anything to kill WoW. It will slowly lose subs on its own, as all MMOs do. Then Blizzard will release their next MMO and get them all back. But others can co-exist just fine.
The market was far less saturated back then than it is right now. Every one wants a slice of the MMO pie. The problem with MMO's is that in contrast to other types of games, most people only play one MMO. Some play two but more is extremely rare, simply because of the time investment is requires to play one and get somewhere within the game.

Also, Blizzard had it's name to go on. They invested heavily in the right places (like a good starting experience, to draw even the most novice of players in) and they had the already massively popular Warcraft franchise. I initially started playing because I was interested in the Warcraft lore. Rift would never do that for me.

I play wow and am certainly thinking to myself that Rift is not that good, in fact I saw a playthrough trailer and thought, How did that person get better wow graphics?
Seriously, it is trying to be WoW, not kill WoW but be WoW.
Lot's of rift defenders are saying that I would not like it because I havent played it but judging from what people who have played it are saying there is no chance I'm going to try.
From the looks of it Rift doesn't even have proper story and is pretty much BC with no proper lore. Yeah, randomn spawns from tough enemies but that happens with events on WoW, like hallows eve and anytime there is an expansion, in fact the enemies spawning from a portal reminds me of The cataclysm event.
The person who said they quit WoW after 10 levels because they reached the barrens should not play rift because from earlier posts the starting zone was brown
Oh and people saying guild wars 2 is different think about this
Cataclysm lets people play as dog people
Guild wars 2 lets people play as cat people, anything similar there?
Oh and Xzi, shut up. you are spewing defences from your keyboard at every single time someone replies to your post that you are wrong because such and such
Who cares if it has better graphics? Say if somone made half life 2 with better graphics but same interface and setting with different charachter models and names, would you buy that, no because you know It's a ripoff becasue they had Facelobsters.
What is more likely to be a Wow killer is if a dragon came out of the ground in real life and everyone goes to fight it (and dies because nobody would actually know what to do)
And people saying that they quit after finishing one character, what happens when you finish playing with rift, go back to Wow?
