Hi, I've come out of watching E3n and like many of you felt a little underwealmed, but that's besides the point: The point being that the new Firaxis Strategy Xcom game (Enemy unknown) looks awesome and really like something I'd want to play. And So, do you have any Good Top Down RPGs in a similar vein to recommend.

Anticipating lots of people recommending the original, please bear in mind that I'm looking for something fairly recent.

Thanks for any suggestions.

My day has come!

Yep, Fire Emblem. Just about every game in the series is at least solid, so give em a shot.

I love the entire series and have played all of those which I have the hardware to play on, I even liked the Gamecube and Wii versions despite the mess they made of Magic and the addition of the Laguz.

What kind of mess did they make of the magic? The only thing I missed was the lack of dark magic (and marginalizing in RD).

The Laguz was kind of meh for me too. Found them to inconsistent to be useful (except for the OP royals).

If you really like the series, check out Geneology of the Holy war [http://serenesforest.net/fe4/] and Thracia 776 [http://serenesforest.net/fe5/] for the Super Famicom/SNES. They got translations patches for them and they're some of the best, but hardest games in the series.
