I forgot Google+ existed until this story... XP
Yeah, same here.

...

Wait sec...

I see what you did there, Google!
They are quite the clever quarry.

EDIT: And no, I have no idea why I wrote that as if I were hunting for Google. >.>

<quote=Steve Yegge>But I'll argue that Accessibility is actually more important than Security because dialing Accessibility to zero means you have no product at all, whereas dialing Security to zero can still get you a reasonably successful product such as the Playstation Network.

Oh burn!

Eh, Google + isn't great, but I remember when people were touting how it was going to kill Facebook. Doesn't look like that's going to happen now.

Google Plus is IRRITATING THE HELL OUT OF ME! Every time I go to change my search from Image to Web or something else to Web, I instinctually hit the furthest left button--and then it takes me to that damned Plus page that I don't care about! MOOOOOOOVE!

Anywho, just figured I'd mention that, I don't have much else to contribute. Oh, the two posts above mine both have cats in their avatar.

*Shrug.* Subjecting him to any obvious punishment would just make things worse. Instead they spin it as proof they're an open company that supports dissent. It's really the best way to go - the news items will be more positive and there won't be an embarrassing followup article where he's hired by Microsoft. This way, the story dies after one iteration instead of getting followup after followup.

And behind the scenes they can quietly nix any hope he ever had for promotion or raises, and no one will ever have proof. So when he realizes he's screwed in a few years he'll just have to quit and it'll be too far along for him to blame this incident.

Yes, when it comes to office politics, I AM a cynic.

Personally I think it's good to see a passionate employee who isn't afraid to speak their mind. If google want to stay on top they need to allow a bit of constructive dissent. Hilarious that he didn't post to the correct circle though, it's the one thing g+ really got right from the outset.

I love it when companies own up to their own shortcomings and the guy has some good points. I think Google handled it well and if they really want to get their 'awesome' accolade they should promote him to work on improving google+.
If this turns out to be a PR trick, and it very well could be, it's an awesome one and I stand by it.

Of course that would imply that Google has ever put more though than "FIND SOMETHING POPULAR AND RIP IT OFF" to begin with.

Came here to post exactly this. Good to see somebody else noticed the big burn slipped in there.

The thing is, he hasn't actually said anything offensive here. And apparently the way Google operates is that they care about everyone's opinion and would rather people dissent than create a culture of yes-men. So oddly enough, this guy could end up being promoted if his memo ends up having the consequence that Google rethink their approach to G+.

"I find your lack of faith...acceptable."

"Wait, don't...what?"

"..."

"You're not going to do anything?"

"Nope."

"Not even a little strangle?"

"Nah."

"Look, I feel bad about this. What if I just strangle myself?"

"Go right ahead. I don't care."

There's no such thing as bad PR. The more people talk about Google+, even its failings, the more people hear about it and are tempted to log in to see what it's all about.

Anyways, Google is looking increasingly awesome as time goes on.
Exactly. Add the whole "we won't tell you to take your comment down, so people will see we are an awesome company that doesn't shit on it's employees" and you get amazing PR you can't even buy.
Well ... that or that the company may actually value a critically thinking engineer. The obvious answer is a mix of the two, the engineer keeps his job whilst his colleagues won't ever let him hear the end of it (thus internal punitives), whilst shutting him up because no way could he be given any credence again in the office after they let him keep his job (and forcing him to stay where he is because companies don't like employing people who badmouth former bosses as it says more about the employee than their past working environments).

Honestly, would others then look at his argument after the company let him keep his job and give it any serious thought beyond 'disgruntled employee'?

So in the end it's good PR, but also good for curtailing anti-company sentiment from within and keeping one more critically thinking employee that might come in handy if their assertions come true.

Executive and HR positions aren't filled by stupid people <.<

Well... that's unexpected. It's funny how saying you had a bad day can get you fired at some places and yet Google does nothing about this. Odd world we live in. Anyway, Google + isn't that bad. It's got a few things to sort out yet but when it gets itself together I think it'll be popular.

The reason the guy is keeping his job is because currently, google is receiving neither good nor bad publicity for this. Maybe boosting a few people opinions.

If they fired the guy, however, they would be receiving a massive amount of shit from people and a stack of bad publicity.

It's much better for them to simply act chill and look good than for them to show the rest of the world how pissed they are.
