On a personal note, I find the subscription system useless, and the idea of challenging television fascinating. I've many subscriptions, and I tend to just go to specific ones and watch videos from their channel, rather than go through the mire of suggested videos in the feed.
I never go for the suggested videos they have been universally rubbish since the channel change, but I tend to visit
youtube.com/feed/subscriptions/u instead of the homepage now which is purely a list of updates to channels you've subscribed to. Luckily I subscribed to a lot of channels because I find it much harder to find new things with the redesign

Part of that is probably their child groups, like Gmail and Youtube.

Another significant part is probably Google Hangouts, which is the single coolest thing to come out of Google+ or possibly anything ever.
What exactly is Google Hangouts? I've heard people talking about it, but I have no idea what it is.

OT: I for one accidently signed up to Google+ during one of the more recent Gmail updates. I doubt I'm the only one in that boat. Any of my activity is based solely on my Youtube or Gmail account usage.
Google Hangouts is kind of like a skype call or other videochat service. The reason it's so cool is that it has a number of built-in features and free add-ons that let you share more than just video and text. The coolest and most-used feature is the ability to watch youtube videos with the other people in the call in real time, letting anyone pause, add a video to the current list of videos, etc. It's kind of like when you and your friends would get together and huddle around a laptop to share the cute kitten videos except better in every way. Also, obligatory XKCD link. http://xkcd.com/920/

Seeing as Google try their hardest to force you into getting a Google+ account when you use their services (I've had to specifically opt out twice), I very much doubt that even a 10th of the supposed users are active. I have also noticed that several prominent Open Source advocates who I follow, who used to be fanatical about Google+ have pretty much abandoned it and gone back to using Twitter or their personal blogs as their primary means of communication.

All they did was add everyone with a gmail or youtube account to the tally. Nothing special, almost none of those people use the social tools.
You are true.

I keep getting harassed by them to use my + account. I'm getting to the point of wanting to ditch my gmail because it wants me to be integrated into everything. I only want email. I don't want to be logged into youtube if I am checking my email.
