I can't believe anyone would be dumb enough to cross Google. I also can't believe someone said/typed "retain our high natural search order" with a straight face.

Ok so now we've seen the power of Google to nerf a company's listing positions.... I can certainly see this power being used for evil. Perhaps blackmail?
When your Google, you don't need to blackmail anyone.

It is certainly satisfying seeing companies getting caught red handed. However, just think how many companies never get caught doing things like this.

Serves them right, and it's not like they got it harsh, before this happened it apparently happened 3 times. Big companies are huge babies I swear.

Why would we care about this? An what does this have to do with gaming?
Not everything has to be about video games specifically.

Anyway, it serves J.C. Penny right for their questionable conduct. Especially since they have been caught in the past doing similar things. Nice to see Google stick it to them. *claps*

We don't always write stories on gaming. That's the main focus on the site, but we often include stories about movies, comics, TV shows, technology, and even Web stuff like this.

You'd think you'd have noticed this seeing as how you've been a member for over a year.

I think this makes me respect J.C. Penny a little better. I gotten some nice jackets on sale from them in the past.

J.C. penny is pretty overpriced anyways...

Serves them right in my opinion, and good job once again Google for cracking down on spam :)

Now if only they could cut down on the porn spam when looking for things not even related to the subject...

Google smacks someone abusing it's system. It's not like legal action has been taken, and there a repeat offender.

Not enough has been done to make me care, but at the very least it's nice to know Google does actually have people in it who give a crap about keeping the searches legit.

J.C. Penney, of course, isn't happy about this. The retail chain fired SearchDex, it's search engine consulting firm. A spokeswoman for the company denied any wrongdoing in the matter, and the company issued the following statement following Google's response: "We are disappointed that Google has reduced our rankings due to this matter, but we will continue to work actively to retain our high natural search position."

This is a very public black eye for J.C. Penney, but I can't exactly bring myself to feel sorry for the company when it was pretty obviously involved with something so shady.
Why do we only read about SearchDex in the penultimate paragraph?

You don't think that's allowing the real devil who sold math as blinders to disappear himself because the rube had a bigger name than him?

Don't you guys EVER take the lesson of "All The President's Men" and just follow money, FOR THE FUN OF AFFLICTING THE COMFORTABLE?

I don't have a fancy degree, but I can damn well tell when a movie is right about how to calibrate a broken bullshit detector.

This was the fourth time that JC Penny got caught doing this...google needs to block all JC Penny results from any search that does not include the company name. ...And don't give me that tired, "It was the marketing firm's fault" line...this is the fourth time it happened; three strikes should be enough, even for a rabid baseball fan.
