My appreciation of gore depends on the movie's tone. If it's a serious film like Saving Private Ryan it makes me a little queasy. However, if it's an over the top film like The Ballad of Ricki-Oh the the more the merrier.

I do have to agree in a way. That scene in Daybreakers was borderlining silliness. But something like the gore seen in Alien or District 9 actually did fit.

Seriously??? I almost threw up, that was more sickening than any amount of blood and guts could ever be

Edit: You've ruined the thread! Everything just makes me think of Al Gore's face popping up everywhere!

OT: I think that gore is mainly used as a cheap selling technique, and is quite often unnecessary.

I want guys exploding. I want shotguns turning heads into brain-and-skull confetti. I want blood by the gallons. I want guts strewn about the room like some sickening decoration. I want people being beaten to death by their own torn off arm. I want chainsaws replacing hands. I want people being held against trains. I want people being decapitated by falling glass. I want people getting shanked in the throat by a razor blade. I want lungs popping. I want ribcages torn open by aliens. I want acid melting faces. I want people being cooked in ovens. I want pick-axes to the face. I want eyes being ripped out.

I want my gore, and I want it ridiculously over the top.

Sometimes gore is good (Letters from Iwo Jima for example) to emphasise the realism and horror of a situation. But, when you make a whole film out of it (e.g the Saw series), it falls flat on it's face. I do not like over the top gore in films, it just makes me laugh.

All I'm saying is, before a film is released, can't they at least cut back on some of the blood? It wouldn't hurt that much, would it? And 'Daybreakers' was just a 15, too.
I actually didn't think it was that bad. What part was so bad? I watch a lot 80's movies- so unless pig intestines are getting eaten out of a severed dummy torso by a pack of zombie extras, I'm really not impressed.

a lot of people like to make out they love excessive violence to seem edgy.
Or they genuinely love it.

Think of it like icing, a cake is still nice without it but icing makes it better.

I like lots of icing.

It's not the worst gore I've ever seen, but I'd only just watched it when I started the topic, and it was fresh in my mind.

And the bad bits were...

...when the guy exploded in the room, and when all the vampires turned on each other in the big fight at the end.

It's definitely not as bad as 'Saw' or anything, but still...

I loved Rambo, but I kept thinking, are the Rebels going to be any nicer than the existing government? I doubt it. So, you just end up watching a lot of people getting blown to smithereens.

I did love that like the first Predator movie, you had an ensemble of fun characters. That older, tough brit was a hoot.

thing is gore is hardly ever necessary in a serious film, take the alien series and compare and contrast with a modern film of the same rating. the only thing that has changed is that the deaths are on screen and people seem to be more wantonly sadistic these days.
Nudity is never necerssary in films but it is becoming more and more common.

Humans have a blood lust, no matter how pro animal, anti - hunting you are, you will like to see violence and blood to some degree.

The people who go and watch these films are obviously going for the gore and blood, so why would you not include that in the film? It's like sitting down to watch a porno but all they do is talk about it and the climax is a kiss.

You can't watch a horror then complain it's to horrific.

Eh, i'm not useually a fan of movie gore, (But game gore is A-Ok) although if some movies use it right, then it's good.

You guys heard about that new action flick "The Expendables?" The one with pretty much every action star EVER in it? The more gore that movie has the better.

I saw Hostel recently and the part where the guy gets his ankles tendons cut made me think 'Fucking hell.. Thats sick.. Is this what counts as horror now?' and it does appearntly, I'm sorry this is'nt horror, this is just gore for the sake of gore, even films that are ment to be 'horror' are just gorefests, only Paranormal Activity was really horror, sad to see horror is just torture porn now.

I thought the worst was...

...watching Sam Neil get torn limb from limb in the elevator. It was brief but it was probably the most brutal.

of mainstream, non porn, I think we are seeing more gore, more "torture horror" and violence in movies than ever before. In the meantime, the motion picture rating system is clamping down on nudity. You can chop a guys skull off and trick him into eating his own pan fried brain (Hannibal) and get an R, but simulated sex and nudity can quickly get you the NC17 kiss of death.

Man, I miss the 1970s.

Too often, you are way correct. I saw and liked a lot Saw I. It quickly degenerated. I did not bother with 3.

Thank-god there is still some good horror out there. Drag Me To Hell was some great stuff. Nothing has topped the Ring for me in the past 20 years.
