The new Xmas trend, coming into the UK...Combining Games, Toys and ....Fishing?

Now, I'm not exaggerating on this at all...

Basically what you have to do is walk around the streets until, using your catcha unit as a compass to direct you to the 'invisible beasts that lurk all around you' and then reel them in so you can store them and use them against your friends.

So...what you're suggesting is telling kids that there are hundreds of invisible beasts around them, go walking the streets and exert great force on a toy handle so you can then set up your own Beggar Fights*

I'm flabberghasted. My ghast has never been more flabbered.

Cheap ripoff, New Shining Star, or a way to ensure kids get hit by moving cars?

* See Fable II debate.

Least they'll be out of the house for once. Maybe a good hit-and-run would build character.

That's how we did it back in our day. Afraid of something? Get hit by cars til you weren't afraid no more!

Huh. If this takes off, there are going to be a lot more silly looking kids in the UK.

Kinda reminds me of a toy I saw an ad for here in Australia. It did pretty much the same thing as this, except it scanned barcodes and gave you a monster for each code scanned.

Barcode Battler? That caused them to have a massive run on uhhh...Dog Food...I think, because it contained their "Egyptian Dog Card"; AFAICR, and snopes might slap me on this they actually caused a glut on all the dog food because of it.

The last time a trendy trend occurred, Josh Kendall was beaten with Hot Wheels tracks until he cried. My god, kindergarten was fantastic.

Sounds and looks really stupid, but, I'd probably use it if it were in the U.S. I'd probably feel really dumb whilst using it, but that probably wouldn't stop me. It's kind of pathetic, really.

There are all kinds of virtual world / real world hybrids coming to cell phones that will offer a lot more depth (and a lot less embarrassment) than a stand alone device like this. Also, the value in such games is their pervasiveness. Walking around with a fishing pole in my pocket is a lot less likely that having my cell phone on me, which I do at almost all times.

Check out, by way of example, Parallel Kingdom [http://toucharcade.com/2008/10/09/mmorpg-parallel-kingdom-set-for-october-31-release], launching at the end of October for iPhones, iPod Touches, and Android-compatible mobiles.

Hooray for a random co-ordinate seeker!

In all honesty, I hardly think that I'm going to see a group of 10-yeay-olds walking down the street holding these things, looking for a Charizard Nyantom. I'm proud to say I went to the trouble of looking up the name of one of those things just so I could make a Charizard joke.
