Latest does not mean equal, and these guys are competing for your purchase.

On average ATI always had the lower prices, but Nvidia does bring the raw power and the marketing that makes it present in almost every game and every gaming related event so people just default to them even with higher prices.

I'm sure a little research will tell you why there is a price difference, other than the fact that they're from two different companies....

For ages the 7970 wasn't as good as the 680 in terms of gaming so AMD did agressive price cuts to stay competitive.

The 7970 Ghz edition matches the 680 (i believe) but I think it's noisier and uses mroe power as a result.

Btw, don't get a 680, get a 670. Much cheaper and it's nearly as good.
i wudve thought ati wud make the latest comparable to nvidias though seems stupid

The major difference is the price however the 680 has better performance and nVidia have been pushing their cards a fair bit especially with Physx.
However I would recommend just getting a 670 over a 680 as it is cheaper and has more than enough power for pretty much all games that are out.

That depends on what you mean as comparable.
Is it the exact same specs?
No. One is always going to perform better than the other. In the case of these two cards I believe it is around a 10 FPS difference between the two cards, which also varies between different games and benchmark programs - sometimes the 7970 can come out in front, dependent on a variety of factors.
AMD has also largely relied on their price difference for sales in my experience. Their parts are cheaper, meaning people building a budget rig will likely go for them over Nvidia/Intel if they're running short on money.

Also keep in mind that AMD would have had little idea of what Nvidia were releasing before the 680 came out, hence they had nothing to compare what they were making to. For all they knew whilst developing the 7970, they could have been blowing Nvidia out of the water. Turned out the other way round in the end.

nVidia shot GTX680 sales in the foot with the release of GTX670 lol, a card which performs within ~0-5% of a 680 in most titles and costs $100 less.

Currently, GPU manufacturing race resembles the SLR camera one. Different market, but hey. It's two main competitors (Nvidia vs. AMD and Nikon vs. Canon) and in both cases it has always been a tag battle. One month one will be ahead and the next the other will be ahead. But lately, Nvidia left AMD in the dust, and AMD are standing there with their long faces wondering wtf to do. Much like how Nikon figuratively exploded Canon's kneecaps in the SLR market, just out of the blue one day, and never got caught.

I don't know if AMD has anything up their sleeves, but it doesn't seem that way.

EDIT: Oh, and even the Nvidia GTX 580 is a better GPU than the 7970. Not by much though, so the AMD alternative could be worth it if you think a $40 cheaper card is worth the hassle of the poor compatibility and timeliness AMD offers with their drivers.
got an ati 5470 mobility atm seems to do fine up until now might go for a 680 in the end probably cuz itll last longer seems a bit like a monopoly on gpus in a way because everyone goes on about nvidia n ati never get a mention. might change in a few years ati might pick up its game would be interesting but concidering nvidia are releasing some super cheap gpu's i read i doubt ati will

The HD7970 overclocks higher than the GTX 680, but the 680 still has more raw power and possibly better drivers. The 7970 had more vRAM and a higher memory bandwidth making it better for AA. So depends on what you're looking for or which camp you're in.

Just throwing this out there, I recently bought an nvidia 660 TI model, how does that compare up against the current "best on the market" models?

Well it's the model under the GTX 670 so I'd say it's pretty good. In comparison, it performs in between the HD7870 and the HD7950.
