I have no where else so turn to... so I thought "why not give here a try?" *ahem* Anyways, I just got Left 4 Dead as a Easter present, and after creating my won steam account and spending an hour installing the thing, I realized that it will not play for crap on my Nvidia 5500 GeForce fx 5500 gpu will not even come close to running this game. I guess I'de gotten off easy with it just running WoW on low settings all the time, and now I need a serious upgrade. Any advice on a video card (must be PCI or AGP, no PCI-e) that will run Left 4 Dead well but without being too pricey (say.. around $100). I appreciate all the help I can get. I don't really care if it can run lag-free with all the setting on high, I just want it to work. Thanks!

Well being limited to PCI and not PCI-e really hurts your selection of good cards. Check the bare minimum vid card that will run the game, I quickly looked it up and it said that you would do fine with an Nvidia 6600.

Ok, the first point I need to make is that PCI cards are much, much, much more expensive than the PCI-e equivelent. You need to accept that you will be paying alot of money for a really bad card. And it is most likely going to be hard to get your hands on a half-decent one.

In my experience, the best bet for someone with your limited choices is a Radeon x1550. Preferably one fo the 512MB ones, but I don't think those come in PCI variety.

Oh, and, good luck. You'll need it.

AGP, eh? Ah... that brings back memories.

Mostly memories of painful lag, but memories nonetheless. Anyway, AGP cards stop at 7600 AGP, which will run L4D smoothly at minimum-ish settings. I found one on newegg for you (component supplier, only ships in USA).

A slightly better AGP card from Nvidia's competitor:

I used to have a 7600gs, it was a good card didn't break in the couple of years I had it and pretty good graphics for the price, but if you can get better for the same price, go for it, I'd stick with Nvidia though, personal preferance :p

This [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102730] is the fastest AGP card available.

You could also save a few bucks and get one of these [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102814]. It's slower, but should do alright with L4D.

The other cards suggested in here are older generations, and seem to be priced pretty high for the performance.

Edit: There's an old comparison of the gaming performance of a few AGP cards paired with a single-core CPU here [http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ati-agp-3850-agp,1939-4.html].
