How long does a product have, video game, cd, book, whatever, have to impress you before you decide to keep playing or throw it away/trade in?

For me its about 3 hours for a game

If it was a casual impulse buy in a Steam Sale it might not get more than an hour. I don't have to be loving it by then, but I have to be seeing something in it that makes me want to continue.

If it's a bigger, more expensive game, or one I've had a lot of interest in prior to playing it then it will likely get longer, but as a general rule if a game hasn't grabbed my attention by the end of an evening's play then the chances are the next day I'll be playing something else.

For games I gave myself a "2 hour rule". If I start playing the game and after 2 hours I have no drive to continue I might put it aside and try out another game. I don't trade it in, I just put it on the shelf as I might try it again later.

A very good example is Persona 2 Eternal Punishment. I got it a bit after it's release date. Started playing and just found the battle system kind of slow and tedious as well as the contact system. Also, how you setup what each character does and then they operate that way until you change them manually was kind of hard to get used to after playing mostly traditional turn based RPGs.

Years later I got Persona 3 after hearing great things about it and loved the game. I decided maybe I'd give Persona 2 another shot even though the game play is quite different. I got past that 2 hour mark and found the game addictive. I could simply not put it down. 50 some odd game play hours after many a challenging battle I finished the game. Now that game easily sits in at least my top 10 list. Boy am I glad I didn't sell it.

Game sat on my shelf for literally over a decade.

Now I have Innocent Sin PSP remake that I'm probably going to play after I finish Tales of Graces F.
