I've seen some pretty amazing graffiti that is done by artists.
'gang graffiti' though is usually a poorly scrawled name or symbol that is basically secret code.
There are plenty of store owners who have had young men approach them and ask if they can draw a mural of something or other on their wall and they said 'yes'. It's just the idea of destroying someone elses' property that pissess me off. You know how often it's just some kid tyring to get 'cred' with a gang by tagging their terrritory with scribbles? A LOT.

Guess who has to investigate that bullshit... me! And I hate it because it's a massive waste of my valuable time because until the store front owner gets a camera or alarm system I'm just going to be back out there every single damned time they repaint the wall.

Though we did just pass a new law making Graffiti a much much harsher crime ($5000 fine or up to 2 years in jail)

I like writing "Take this, society!" on walls.
Take that, society!
In other words, graffiti is for 21-year olds with 12-year old ego and respect for property.

I agree.

I think it is a valid art form, but that kind of graffiti should be left out of public places, you can't trust people to always be artistic about their graffiti

i think if the govts pulled their fingers out and stopped just cleaning it up and instead make large places for this so called art to take place then , then we would stop paying through the nose to correct a vandals work

If it looked awesome I'd allow it. Belfast always has some awesome stuff (even if it looks sinister).

I do not permit half-arsed vandalism. It must be done with the whole arse, or the perpetrators shall be shot for wasting my valuable lookin' time.

Well If its really good graffiti with artisticness..? then I have no problems with it but if it's just some gang stuff defacing an otherwise decent neighborhood then I would prefer it if the creator was thrown into a vat of acid.

I've seen some rather impressive graffiti, so for me it depends on how well it's done. Also, as a picture posted above shows, it can be hilarious in the right context.

Depends on what you mean by "graffiti". If you mean graffiti as in the art then I think it's pretty cool but if you mean where some douche bag with a tin of spray paint writes his name on a wall in the most uncreative way possible, that's just stupid.

Graffiti is pretty cool. Bottom line is, If you suck at it, don't do it.

(Or at least practice before you ruin the wall)

I did some with a friend one, it was a small stencil of a baloon, about 6 inches high. We sprayed on some fence posts and those green telephone exchange boxes. We have been intending to do some mor ebut havent gotten round to it.

It depends with me. Some artists such as Banksy you would call art and I enjoy seeing that. If your refering to etching on bus windows then that can seriously go f itself.

actualy (atleast in my country Latvia) there is no gangster graffiti, but there are plenty of graffiti crews that write their name which are just a group of writers.

i see that a lot of you (like most people who dont do graff) hate the tags but like murals, which i think is logical, but you must understand that almost every writer who paints on walls tags (signatures) or does throw ups (quick, usually one line letters) who may seem ugly just to get fame and respect from other graff writers.

AND every good writer or legend was once a toy (noob of graff) and in order to get better everyone has to practice on walls which means that there will never be only beutiful murals and paintings, and that is why it is so difficult to truly appreciate or judge the world of graffiti at first sight

I like graffiti, I've done a fair bit too. I think a big problem is most people don't know how to read it, it's (sort of) grown into an art form with it's own rules and guides with entire books on the ins and out. I find the difference betweens between American, West European, Eastern European and Middle Eastern graffiti fascinating.

Communist era East European graffiti is particularly interesting (spray paint was illegal in the USSR as a 'subversive material', so half the amazing nature of it is the ways they solved the problem of not having what is considered the standard graffiti artist's tool).

I see quite a lot of really quite clever art that people dismiss as squiggles because they take neither the time to look properly or learn what it's supposed to mean. Gang tags on the other hand...

I tried it, once. Doodled 'would you kindly' on that plastic thing the toilet paper fits into in pencil. (Why can't I remember the name? W/e, doesn't matter)
Funny that, I left that phrase and alittle Big Daddy type logo on the inside of a swimming pool toilet door. But by the time I got back with a camera the door had been removed, I need a camera phone.

It's not that cool. If you own the wall you're going to be spraying, go ahead. Someone else's wall, and I'll call the cops. My wall, and I'll shoot you in the leg.

I once wrote "LEMON CURRY?" in massive letters on some wooden boarding outside of a building site, but other than that no, I'm not that hardcore.

I do love graffiti though, even the terrible stuff can give a place character.
