Gran Turismo 5 Creator Wanted Grand Theft Auto Mode

If Kazunori Yamauchi had a few extra years to work on Gran Turismo 5, it may have had an open world component.

Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi recently fielded questions from Grand Theft Auto [http://www.amazon.com/Gran-Turismo-5-Playstation-3/dp/B002BSA1C6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291232026&sr=8-1], minus the car theft and murder. Yamauchi mentioned that he wanted to add a free-roaming mode to Gran Turismo 5, but didn't have the time.

A NeoGAF member translated a fan question that asked about a free-roaming mode for Gran Turismo 5's cities where players would be able to drive around and obey traffic laws, sticking to the speed limit and getting out of the car to walk around and visit stores. Yamauchi replied that this was something he had planned for Gran Turismo 5.

The free-roaming mode obviously didn't make it in, but it sounds like something that could have been both cool and really boring. Would you get pulled over for breaking the speed limit or running a red light? I'm not sure we need a realistic driving experience that replicates how real world roads work, especially if it adds even more time to Gran Turismo's development schedule. For the brief period that a mode like this might allow the player to actually break driving laws, it would provide some fun until accidentally crashing into a tree and having to report the incident to the insurance company, which isn't enjoyable at all.

Still, maybe Gran Turismo 6, which is already in development [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105021-Polyphony-Already-Working-on-Gran-Turismo-6], will include a mode that allows us to impress potential mates by driving past them at the speed limit in a really fancy car. Yamauchi doesn't appear to be thinking about that game just yet though, as he also mentioned that a "mechanical damage" update will be added to Gran Turismo 5 in the future, along with some sort of "credit" or experience system for online play, so the developer is still hard at work on his just-released baby.

Nope. Grand Traffic Auto. Don't forget the Damage realism in these sims... If he made open world, you'd have to obey the stop signs and red lights of the world or risk getting into one shit of a nasty fender bender. Unless you hit the back roads, but I wonder if you can tune these cars well enough for "Back roads" performance

OT: IF HE HAD A FEW MORE YEARS? Jesus, the game took you 5 just to make enclosed courses, and it was a good 3-4 over what it was suppsoed to take. LAUCH TITLE Polyphony. Learn it.

Mafia had both of those, and is well known as the best game ever made.

Apology in public, calls for, this does.

Yay realistic damage! It makes chasing down baddies so much easier, just run them off the road at high speeds. I always wanted a game where people could get pulled over and what not...

Oh, wait, I already bought Mafia II, where people have this tendency to run into you, get out and yell at you or hand you a ticket. Or straight up shoot you in the face for hitting a cop car at 5 mph. Or pulling over the guy you are chasing, causing a mission failed...

But Grand Traffic Auto would be fun.

Hmmm... "A learn how to drive" game could come from this. Just bundle the game with a steering wheel and they maybe onto something.

That mode could have been serious fun. Who wouldn't love the freedom to crash a Bugati Veyron into a bus full of nuns and schoolchildren?

It is one thing to be ambitious with your game design, but this is getting to the relm of overreaching one's grasp. While it may seem like a nice idea there are production deadlines that need made or you run the risk of ending up in development hell and making the game take even longer to be released.

Was looking forward to that, until I read what he actually said. It would be awesome if you had an actual garage with all your cars in it, where you get in or out of them at will and take them for a spin around a track. Would sure as hell beat all the loading screens.

I was thinking that something like this would be cool. Recreating daily driving is something no racing sim has done. It would certainly be fun to take a Ferrari 458 and drive it around just to fling it into corners and hear the engine note.

If I want a racing sim, I expect a racing sim like GT or Forza. If I want racing car mayhem, I can look at almost any other game. I think it's a stupid idea.

I wish Polyphony would stop working on these boring racing games and make a damn Omega Boost sequel.

Deadlines? Polyphony doesn't know what that word means. GT5 was supposed to be a fucking launch title for the PS3.

Thats the problem with game makers like Kazunori Yamauchi, they spend so much time reaching for the sky instead of getting the core gameplay down perfect Regardless how great GT5 plays, the fact only 20% of the cars have great damage, graphics and cockpit views is crap. Also he is adding stuff to the game as updates, core stuff that should have been on the disc at launch. I like that he wants to make the best driving game full of different things but concentrate on the main game and then spend time on extra content afterwards. Then if you run out of time atleast you have an amazing core game you can add to and not an average game with bits missing.
Well, the core gameplay itself was completed years ago with GT5 Prologue. All these years it's been content and features that have been made, along with tweaks to the game itself.

Am I missing something in the Gran Turismo games? Because this sounds boring as hell... like GTA without the fun? Since when was realism more important in a game than actually having FUN?

Is it really that hard to imagine that some people like their games to have realism as it adds their fun? If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

Also,

OT: The guy is basically an obsessive perfectionist, and while that's admirable to an extent, there's just a point where enough is enough. Maybe GT6 will finally quench his desire for the "perfect" racing game in his eyes.

Quite frankly, I just don't see Gran Turismo as a type of game where free roaming would be an enormous benefit. Not beacuse of the "traffic rules", but beacuse it wouldn't enhance the main draw of Gran Turismo games in any way.

But then again, I didn't think much of the free roaming in Need for Speed: Underground 2 either.
