Well to preface, I've only played saints row 1 and GTA 3, but i enjoyed saints row much more which probably comes down to the controls in GTA3 ruining any experience for me.

I prefer Saints Row, for many reasons. I like being able to customize my character, I also find it much more amusing and well written. I just sorta felt like it understood its audience better, and I can't wait for SR3

Can't I have both? It's a very tough choice for me as both a massive SR2 and GTA4 fan.

For co-op, SR2.

For solo play, GTA.

For radio...SR1.

SAINT'S ROW!!! Cuz playing as an immigrant bitching to his cousin about how bad they need money and the reason he's doing all these jobs while sitting on over 150k is lame. Also what other game can you run around dressed as a mime spartan, while spraying exotic cars and cops with a truck full of poop? WHAT OTHER GAME CAN YOU?!

Saints Row 2.

GTA IV has an incredibly powerful story, expertly told, which had me at the edge of my seat until the very end... after which I considered myself done with the game.

Saints Row 2 doesn't really HAVE a story, just a half-assed excuse for the player to go out and have fun. I played through it all - and then I kept playing. I'm STILL playing Saints Row 2, and I'm not going to quit until November 15th this year. No points for guessing why.

I might not even buy the next GTA!

I'll just compare the last two of each:

Saint's Row 2 is my choice as I just had fun with it. Plus, the character customization was amazing.
GTA4 had an interesting story, but since I'm not a big fan of crime stories it wasn't to my liking at all (I expected it to be a bit more over the top than it was, like San Andreas serious but still over the top).
I did enjoy driving around town or riding in taxis or even taking friends out. I loved that stuff. It was fun to role play. But then you'd hit the story and Niko seemed so different from how I chose to play. It was hard to like him when I enjoyed my own version of him so much more.

Saint's Row had this problem as well, to be fair, but at least my character was fun during most the cutscenes. Plus, I love the lesbian tendencies of the lady main character. I wish the sex mini-game had made it so she was a lesbian, would have made the game even better. xD

I prefer the GTA series, because it is more serious. although i strongly dislike getting bugged every 5 minutes by roman and company. i know i can turn my phone off but still, its annoying. i hope this feature is dropped or at least toned down for GTA 5. or instead of having me take NPC's out drinking, how about a real XBL or PSN friend. that would be better.

Depends on what I'm in the mood for. Saints Row 2 is great for more fun by way of mayhem, but it's got some assy shooting and driving mechanics. Not that GTA4's shooting is pristine, but it's way smoother than SR2's.

If I just want to drive around and sort of take it easy, then I'll play GTA4: The Lost and the Damned. The motorcycles in it are so fun to drive, especially when you're with your brothers.

Of course, Bully beats the tar of of both games...

I had a lot more fun with Saints Row 2, especially once I found an site showing me how to make my british MC look like Dr. House.

GTA because the PC port for Saints Row 2 barely worked.
Yea.
It was almost as bad as the port for GTA4.

For me it depends.
For this generation, I would have to say I'm looking forward to the next Saints Row much more than I'm looking forward to the next GTA (or whatever pretentious melodrama R* is working on now) but I can't say I liked Saints Row 2 more than GTA San Andreas. I think I liked San Andreas a little more. Too bad R* doesn't make games like that anymore; it's all "we're grownups and grownups only like overwrought drama and emotionally contrived characters." and they're not even very good at it.

I haven't really played Saints Row that much, but from what I've heard I'd probably enjoy it more than I did GTAIV. I used to play GTA games to mess around more than I did for the story or anything and then GTA went and took a more serious tone. The game looks and plays pretty nice, but it doesn't have much room to mess around as much as the previous games did. Half of the fun in the old games was putting on all the cool cheat codes and going crazy.

Both. Seriously, why do I have to validate wanting one over the other when they are so damned different now. GTA 4 is now more serious and more story driven, whilst saints row 2 is fun of random fun with a fairly loose structure. And whilst I may sometimes want to play chicken in a WW2 fighter with a friend (which he lost as we rammed each other blowing him up, whilst I got windshield cannoned out.) or get flung over the map by going limp in front of a truck cab, sometimes I'd rather have a decent story and some fairly good driving mechinics.

GTA had me until Vice City. Gritty realism was not a good direction for the series to go. Hell, I barely made it 5 hours into GTAIV before I lost interest in it. I'll have to go with Saints Row.
