Yeah screw us PC gamers, we don't need em. We will be greedy and release the game 6-12 months later with another version for the "next gen" and get more money out of the people who will buy it again that will buy the next gen consoles to maximize profits.

Let's waste money on tones of marketing and not bother to make a port for PC to release it simultaneously.

Sigh, I'm kinda tired of their bs, I don't think I will even bother with this game if it releases so late on PC.

Like everyone else, I'd like to know where that money went to? Food? Equipment? or did one guy make unreasonably high demands for his workspace, like a massage chair, shrimp boat, chocolate fountain, gold plated desk and a personal opera singer to get him in the zone and everybody wanted to get them some of dat?

Looks like someone filed a couple dozen Ferraris under "development costs" for a tax break.....

Rockstar will make this back several times over. My biggest guess at the development cost are server farms for GTA online and the creation, modification and optimization of the game engine.

I DEFEND MY USE OF LITERALLY!

$200 million sunk into TOR just so it could be flipped into free-to-play six months down the road is the very definition of blown money in my mind. If EA had designed that sucker as F2P from the start, you can bet it would've been a lot closer to $20 million.
I wasn't arguing that the money wasn't wasted. I was pointing out that Bioware did not physically blow 200 million dollars onto anything. Apparently, "literally" doesn't mean literally anymore so I was wrong. And two informal uses of the word "blow" in some dictionaries fits with your usage. So I was kind of, maybe wrong there. Not that I looked into this or anything. >.>

Why are these games costing so much???

It can't be salaries. If they had a team of 500 people working on it and they are all paid 100,000 that's only 50M of the 267M budget.

So where is the money going?

I don't know how I feel about this. On the one had it is a ludicrous amount of money to spend on game development and advertising. On the other hand though I am sure Rockstar is going to make this back plus much more and from how GTA V looks that it is money well spent.

I'm assuming that most of it went into developing and designing GTA Online which looks amazing.

Even blasted movies are criticized for costing that much money to develop.

God Speed Rockstar.

With a budget like that, even if the game sold great in comparison to others, it may not put much of a dent into the monstrosity that is that budget.

The only media to ever cost more is Pirates 3, at 300 million.
Isn't that the porn movie? I knew they were the highest budget porn parodies but gee whiz, 300 million...

Yeahhhhhh wasn't GTA IV huge as well? And that did pretty well. We shall see...did this budget include marketing? add another 100 million minimum if not.
I'm not sure if that first part is a legit question. He meant pirates of the carribean 3...

Also, the $267m includes the marketing budget.

That would actually make sense, seeing as they are planning on GTA online is being sold as a huge experience so they would have needed to spend a fair bit on that as well.

Damn, that's a lot of money. I'd love to see how that is broken down to the various parts of development/marketing etc. I'm expecting a large chunk was to throw adverts at people, but even so that's a huge budget. Maybe they were using strippers as mouse pads?
Probably advertisements.

I mean, one of them involved renting out the building ad space of three popular hotels in Los Angelos and making three humongous murals just to advertise the thing.

So this will be the final nail in the coffin for rockstar and the proof that the gaming industry is as bloated and oblivious as Hollywood.

They won't turn away from their "realistic and gritty" path.

Also they want to sell HOW many units and not even mention a PC release? The platform that MADE Rockstar?

I don't know. If the game sold as well as GTA IV, Vice City or San Andreas each did then that would be 20 million copies sold.

20 million x $60 is $1200 million makes back the budget with a little to spare ;P Even with the 2/3's going to Sony/Microsoft/Retailers that's still $170 million pounds profit.

Heck, if it sells worse than any other main franchise GTA since GTA II, only as well as the PSP spin-off (10 million copies), that's still a tidy $600 million.

It's incredible how well the franchise does when you think about it.

Well off the top of my head there's production of physical items, marketing, localization.....but really I don't see how even that adds up to as much as the numbers are.

I remember when a new GTA release was really exciting. Man times have changed. The only people really talking about this game are the media.
Lol.

GTA4 threads are doing so popular on reddit they are turning up on the front page. Reddit is on fire. This site is right now on fire. People on my FB pages are on fire. People want this game.

Me? I could not really give a damn. More of an RTS gamer. If it comes to PC, I will buy it. If it does not, I won't.

Also, are you a sarcasmbot or something?

I guess you're really excited about something that's not causing the fever pitch it used to. What's happening on Reddit or your Facebook page don't really compare to the kind of excitement these games used to create. What the hell is so sarcastic about that?
