...So in honor of Red Dead Redemption, which comes out at midnight to night (when I'll be picking it up) I ask you escapist's, What is your favorite Western game, book, movie?.....

My pick goes to the original red dead revolver because I had never played any western games before that and I fell in love with it, I thought (in a slightly over-the top way) it captured the Wild West in the way I had always imagined it.

Also, which Red Dead Revolver cameos do u hope to see in Redemption?...I read a rumor that Jack Swift may return at some point... :)

I never played Red Dead Revolver, but I did play Gun, which I thought was a pretty good game.

I don't like western stuff except for the Spaghetti Westerns. The actor who played McCoy in Star Trek also did a lot of westerns.

Once upon a time in the West. Such an epic movie. Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone on top form. Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and Henry Fonda in great roles.

Never played Red Dead Revolver, makes me curious about Redemption. Too bad it comes out the 21st where I live. Have to wait a couple more days.

I still remember "Gun" fondly. In fact, i can see its case from where i am currently sitting. Maybe i'll just play that and imagine super-duper hard that its RDR until i actually have the money for it.

As for movies, i think i don't think i can resist casting my lot for "Blazing Saddles." Classic.

Man, I can't wait 'till it's released! I love western games.
As far as western games go, I quite liked Call Of Juarez. But Red Dead Redemption will probably be on a whole 'nother level of awesome.

"A Few Dollars More"

Far and away the best of the Man With No Name trilogy.

Gun was good fun on the PS2, although had little replay value. Very much looking forward to Red Dead Redemption as well, but I won't be getting it for a while.

Gun was freaking fantastic. I loved that game, and I'm looking forward ro Red Dead Redemption. Hoping it lives up to the personal bar that Gun set for me.

The movie Tombstone with Kurt Russell, is one of the best.
Plus the real Doc Holliday was awesome.

Gun, as it's the only Western game I've played. It was pretty fun.

Tombstone is a great one. It's a revisionist viewpoint on real events, but the movie is just a classic.

Also, 'Unforgiven' is excellent. Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman all do exceptional in their roles.

I don't get into the older westerns, though I've watched quite a few, while good, they're just not as riveting as some of the newer classics are. 'Little Big Man' is great, with Dustin Hoffman, and so is "The Treasure of Sierra Madre".

All of these are on IGN's Top 25 Westerns in celebration of Red Dead Redemption's release.

I'd have to say Tombstone is my favourite too, Val Kilmer is excellent as Doc Holliday.

Bloke I've Forgotten: Why, it's the drunk piano player. You're so drunk, you can't hit nothin. In fact, you're probably seeing double. [Draws knife]

Doc: [Draws two guns] I have two guns, one for each of ya.

Am I really the first one to say The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? For shame, Escapists. For shame.

And Kung Fu of course.

Well I also have a special place in my icy, Kevlar heart for the original Red Dead, but I'm skeptical about cameos since I don't know much about the time gap.

I am hoping for some kind of sequel though, like one character being revealed as an aging Red.

Once Upon a Time in the West. I think I need to watch that again.

I also liked the first Red Dead and am most definitely picking up Redemption on Friday.

My experience with the genre is limited to Gun and 3:10 to Yuma -both excellent- so I will have to go for those.

..westerns...no...

flash backs from the bright sand/lights that the theme is based around is making me burn up like a vampire.
however playing such a game is never going to be about the killing sprees or the story (the story that might come up could have been written by a 5 yearold), just the experience of being in a western which is not very tasteful for me
