Powers. Screw the rules. Powers both is and isn't about superheros. Its about the homicide decitives that have to deal with the death and other consquences of people with superpowers. Its an amazing. Its funny, dark, has a great story, great art and the dialogue is extremely snappy. Say what you will about Bendis that man knows how to write great dialogue.
Agreed, Powers is an enjoyable comic. I stopped reading it several years ago, but it was really fun.

Alice in Sunderland: its sorta a novel slash documentary, describing the history of a surprisingly interesting city.
Red Son: What if Superman was a Soviet, and our only hope was a genius called Lex Luthor?
Corto Maltese: Tin Tin for grown ups, about a globe trotting sailor who fights, shags and recites poetry through the early 20th Century.

Note that strictly speaking, none of these are really graphic novels, but also strictly speaking, I hate how people try to distinguish their big-boy-grown-up-comics from normal comics.

Planetary has an omnibus, and two Absolutes - not that you'll actually find first one anywhere for reasonable price. It has the typical Ellis protagonist as in smokes, snarky etc and is overall metacommentary on comics and the like for 20th century.

Branching from Sandman, Lucifer reprint was recently completed with fifth book. Yahweh hires Lucifer for one job, which leads to some serious changes to Creation's nature.
