Warren Ellis! He is amazing. Transmetropolitan never fails to make me smile when I read it.
Eric Powell is another great writer/artist. The Goon is a fantastic series, and I highly suggest it to anyone who is even somewhat interested in comics.
Someone else already mentioned it, but Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is quite a fun read.
have you read Planetary?

I got the first trade paperback to give it a look...but it really pissed me off how it seemed to jump all over the palce...(I guess I havnt got that far though)
I have not. Now I feel like I'm really missing something cool. Pretty much all of my comic books have come from my local library. Now that I moved away from that place, I have to search for more at new libraries. It's somewhat challenging >.<

Jennifer Blood is good. It's Garth Ennis, who wrote for 2000AD before coming to the U.S.

If you like older, try DC Collected works of Alan Moore. It has several volumes, so start with one and if you like it, read more.

No Man's Land is amazing. So is Long Halloween.

On the Marvel side, Kraven's Last Hunt is more of a character study of both Kraven the Hunter and Spider-Man. So popular it spawned many sequels.

Most of Ultimate Spider-Man is good.

ah I see

I'm surprised Libarys have comics, I somtiems find it hard enough to find the particular ones I want at stores (thank god for ebay)

and yeah, trade paperbacks do add up cost wise at $20-30

I got very lucky with my area's libraries. They had a comic book geek working in the library, and he picked out a lot of great books.

Oh lord. I'd go broke so fast if I got my comics through stores.

I have some recommendations (that have not already been recommended):
Powers
Locke and Key
Planetary
100 Bullets
Fables
Hellblazer
V for Vendet
Alan moore's run on Swamp Thing

Pretty much all that come to mind. All get the Breakfastman Seal of Awesomeness, so... Read 'em.

Oh God, I don't know what I would do if I moved away from my local library system. I get all my comics from the library (which has a ton of trades in the system). I would probably have to spend a fortune on the (way to expensive) trades. :(

No, Hitman isn't based on the video game, it's set in a Gotham slum and Tommy Monaghan (never called "Hitman" in the comics) is the main character. He is a Gulf War Veteran who decides to become a contract killer specializing in metahumans after he acquires X-Ray vision and mild telepathy. It is set in the established DC Universe and has appearances of Batman, The Joker, Green Lantern, Catwoman and others including a great encounter with Superman.

As to why I'd really only recommend TDKR by Miller and Hitman by Ennis. Well firstly they are each writer's best books/runs IMO.

They are also the most accessible books by these writers. OK Batman: Year One and the Miller Daredevil stuff aren't too hard to get into or confronting, but they also aren't as good as TDKR...and some of Miller's later stuff is just a bit shit. I can find stuff to admire in the art of Sin City but I think by that stage Miller had almost become a parody of himself.

As for Ennis, like I said, Preacher was a bit too angry and that makes it a little unfocused, and I also think Ennis went off the rails a bit post Hitman. Hitman, while pretty violent, isn't too confronting, and it has a classic tragic arc that is a bit missing in Ennis' later stuff. Really though Ennis is best left to people who like Ennis, Hitman gives people a taste of Ennis at his best, while still remaining fairly friendly for everbody...also it has Dogwelder!

Well I have a couple that normally aren't suggested. I recommend Perse-

... Did I actually get ninja'd on this? Never thought I'd see the day.

Also got ninja'd on Bone and Atomic Robo.

Consider that recommendations to check those out as well. None of them really fit the typical mold so I recommend approaching them as they are. Not as anything like a superhero comic.

For a little information: Persepolis is the auto-biography of a girl living in Tehran during the Islamic revolution and following her life up until she was much older. Bone starts off as being pretty goofy and comedic but eventually becomes something of an epic fantasy. Lastly Atomic Robo is just slightly goofy action fun. I haven't seen much of a long arc or anything in it quite yet so keep that in mind.

Lastly I'll suggest SkyDoll by Barbara Canepa and Alessandro Barbucci. A very nicely drawn and colored comic with some pretty interesting characters and storyline. VERY fanservice-y though due to an aspect of the plotline. Just take a look and see what you think.

Other people have suggested most of the stuff I would suggest but i'll echo somebodies else's suggestion of All Star Superman, which I recommend to anyone who thinks superman is boring. As well as The Goon which is one of the funnest series I've ever read.

As for stuff people haven't suggested yet...

Superman: Red Son and Batman: War Games.

Also, Bendis and Maleev's run on Daredevil was gritty, had great story telling and just plain great.

Said it before but gentleman corpse.

About a parastic worm that infests corpses and solves various supernatural crimes. The first book blends dark hummour with twisted gorey horror stuff.

Sure is.

Always wanted to try and get hold of Watchmen myself, or Sin City, I love that style. Personally the only graphic novel I own is Serenity: Those Left Behind, shut up I'm a fanboy.
