Gruesome and funny, you say?
Well, then Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis is right up your alley! It's got some great bastardly humor in it.
Also, The Goon by Eric Powell. The series is just pure gold.

If you want to touch into the Manga side of graphic novels, there's Hellsing, as well as TriGun.
Hellsing is more action, while Trigun is more comedy and still a good amount of action.

Ninja'd, son of a *****..
Yeah, i second Transmetropolitan as a pulpy, funny, brilliant story. It's available in 11 volumes, and they're reasonably priced i think.. ?15 at any rate. They're pretty long if that helps you out. =P

My older brother used to read something caled "Battle Pope", something to do with a gun slinging pope.

"The league or extraordinary people" was pretty good as well.

My favorites so far are:
.Watchmen for its way of redefining super heroes in a more dark yet human way, and of course for having the perfect in between good and bad ending.
.The Killing Joke for the insanity of The Joker's plan to drive Commissioner Gordan completely insane along with it being an interesting possible explanation to how the Joker became The Joker.
.Johnny The Homicidal Maniac because it is hilarious yet gruesome.
Deadpool: Suicide Kings, it's Deadpool against The Punisher, enough said.
And lastly Kick-Ass, because of it's way of parading the obsessive super hero nerds in a good way.
