I don't know if this is in the right spot so mods should feel free to move it.

My laptop recently died and, being in college, i really needed one on hand. So my parents brought up a computer they purchased maybe a year ago. It has:

AMD 9500 Quad Core 2.20 GHz
4 GB Nvidia Ram
Asus motherboard (not sure on type)
And I believe a 800 watt power supply, not completely sure.
Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT graphics

The problem is, I would like to pump up the graphics a bit more but have become lost in a sea of numbers.

"A 9400 is worse then an 8800 but better then an 8400" ect. And then there's the ATI cards.

I'm lost. So here's the question:

For $200 or less whats a good graphics card that's better then the 9400 and will run based on the rest of my computer?

If I understand you correctly, I don't think you will find any gfx card that is decent for $200 or less, let alone BETTER. If however you are talking about finding a gfx card that is $200 or less THAN the one you have..i still think you will find it hard to do better. better will mean more money and clearly that's what appears to be the issue. I don't know what to suggest.

should get you started. I'm not sure exactly how to know which card is compatable with your motherboard. I'm sure you can google it. Be very careful tho.

get an ATI Radeon HD 5770, it's direct x11, only $150 and it gets a bit of a boost from your AMD processor...

That was a pretty nice chart there.

What I would recommend is to just go on Newegg.com, go look at the video cards, pick your price point and start comparing stuff. Once you find a card you like you can go on the web to find benchmark comparisons between it and other similar cards.

I concur with the 5770, if you can get a more powerful edition of the 5000 series, like the 5830, then get that.

Thanks everyone!

I'll definitely check out that 5770. Might jump over the price limit for that 5830 tho.

And thanks to Sleekgiant for that chart. Helps quite a bit!
