I believe the iphone port of the shmup Rrootage is free, you just need to pay to unlock the leaderboard.

While it's no where close to been as good as a CAVE iphone shmup, it's one of the better examples of the genre.

I have been playing Clash of Clans, it is a game that consists of two main features: building a village and raiding other peoples.

You start of with a town hall and some basic buildings. You can build resource collectors (gold and elixer, each required for different things) and those will automatically gain resources over time. To gain more resources as well as trophies you can raid other peoples villages when they are offline or do not have a shield active. Shields can be bought (but are not really worth it) or if your base is attacked and your defence loses you gain one for a certain time period, either twelve or sixteen hours depending on how badly it lost.

In your base you can move buildings about, build defences, walls and collectors, as well as upgrade those buildings using resources. You also build your army using elixer.

In enemy villages you select the different troops and place them on the map manually. Once placed they are out of your control and follow their own rules (most attack the closest building, but others target resource collectors or defences for example).

You get gems as an extra resource. Gems can speed up production, buy certain special items and shields or you can buy gold and elixer. Gems are earned via achievements or finding them randomly by removing foliage and other debris from your village. They can also be bought with real money.

There are clans and leagues that you can join. Clan members can donate troops to each other that can be used for base defence when a player is offline or when the player raids an enemy. The top three clans each fortnight get free gems as a reward split between the top ten members of each clan.

Pros:

- The game is free and you really do not need to buy gems to play it successfully.
- It can be quite fun designing a base and setting traps.
- It doesn't require constant playing to do, you can leave it whenever you like.
- It's a fairly well designed strategy game, despite it's simplistic appearance.

Cons:

- Build times get pretty long, for example my town hall is level 6 out of 10 levels and has a six day build time to get to level 7. It only gets higher.
- While gems are not necessary to play they do make it easier, a lot easier.
- Leaving the game sets your base available for attack if you do not have an active shield. You can come back the next day to find you don't have many resources thanks to a raid. Although they can only take a certain percentage of total resources each raid.
- There are times when you cannot do anything. If all of your builders are working and your armies is being trained you cannot do anything except move things about really, which means it's not the kind of game you can just sit and play for an hour (not later in the game anyway, in the beginning build times are short so you can).

If you do decide to give it a try, bear in mind you start with some free gems. As tempting as it is, do not use them on anything except for buying building huts until you have the maximum amount. Having more builders means more can be done simultaneously, which in the long run is much better than not having to wait for ten minutes before something is built.

The two games that I play the most on my phone are robot unicorn attack and ninjump. I can't remember if the first robot unicorn attack was free or $1, but the second one is taking the F2P model with some cosmetic items/boosts. Both of the games I mentioned are platformers and are great ways to pass some time if you are in a waiting room or whatever.
