So, pretty simple question now that we're all in the holiday spirit. What's the best gift you've ever given, and what's the best gift you've ever received? All holidays, birthdays, and "Just 'cause" gifts count.
For me, my girlfriend loves everything Victorian London and she also loves sewing and making her own clothes. She once told me about a little butterfly hairclip she saw several years ago with a needle and thread hidden in the base that she always regretted not buying. So last year, I found an antique "Nanny Brooch" from around 1880. It's goldstone and brass, and the end unscrews to reveal a little compartment to hold a needle and thread. She absolutely loves it. It's similar to this one.

As far as gift getting, My father got me a subscription to the Whisky Explorers Club. Every month, I got 4 of those mini bottles of various whiskys in black cloth bags, so you can do a blind tasting and compare what you got. There was everything from cheap honey bourbon to super expensive single-malt scotch. It was an amazing gift, and I had a ton of fun learning about different whiskys.

So escapist members, what're your favorites?

Thats a great gift buddy. Its nice when someone puts some thought in to get something personal to an individual. Bet you got major brownie points with your girlfriend

Im not too big on gift giving/receiving. I usually get a bottle of booze, a band t-shirt and some aftershave (the joys of being an adult). I work quite far away from my family and I know its a bit corny but the best christmas gift is getting the time off and going to see my family and having my mum make a big turkey dinner. I suppose christmas for me is more akin to what americans would do on thanksgiving

The greatest gift I ever gave was to a coworker at a Christmas in July party, back when I worked at a summer camp.
The camp was on an island in a river, and we had really small parking lots for the campers to unload their gear each week. So, half the staff stayed on the island to get the new campers registered and moved to their campsites and the other half of the staff went to the mainland to direct traffic. The person I was given to shop for was the guy who always ended up in charge of the traffic crew, despite his pleas and attempts at bribery to get out of it.
So, I bought one of the orange traffic safety vests and had his name embroidered where he would have pinned his name badge. I got a standing ovation for the gift.

That was pretty smart of you. I love giving gifts that stem from logic and/or understanding a person.

As for me, I revel in taking note of something that somebody mentions way early in the year and buying it for them. This could mean anything from an ultraviolet fingernail dryer for a co-worker who loved getting her nails done but couldn't afford to go to salons, to a Masterpiece Thundercracker [http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/attachments/items-sale-trade/27320114d1347596245-fs-mp-7-masterpiece-thundercracker-leg-tailfin-mod-dsc05515.jpg] for my childhood friend who became an officer in the Air Force. Oh right, and Masterpiece Grimlock [http://needlessessentialsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Grimlock_Masterpiece.jpg] for another childhood friend whose toys were secretly donated when he left for college. It's all just logic really.

Regarding myself, I had a friend constantly bug me to create an Amazon Wish List year after year. I finally relented and created one, and he immediately ignored it. Years pass, and without fail, he sends me a gift card instead. I'm not complaining, but I do hate being really good at buying people presents but never get the "perfect" gift myself, despite leaving my Wish List public. Oh well.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

The best gift I ever received was a poster and picture from a girl I am friends with. Backstory time! One night we were texting and she was going on about how hot Legolas and Frodo from the Lord of the Rings movies are. I just replied with an okay. She said I was making her glum so I decided to cheer her up. The following text is currently hanging in my room.

"Ahem. Legolas is one sexy Mudatrucker. I would love to meet him and just bask in his sexiness." I then followed up with something saying Frodo was hot too.

She replied by giving me a poster with the quote and a picture of Frodo saying my last name to put in my wallet. Both reside on my wall and wallet. Best gift I ever got.

The best gift I have given was to my cousins. I gave one of them my massive collection of Legos, and the other my massive collection of army men. Never seen them look so happy.

My parents got me a set of Bose 20i quiet comfort acoustic noise cancelling earbuds this Christmas and I think they are amazing, hands down the best earbuds I have ever had.

I have two gifts that I am proud of giving, and the recipient of both gifts was my mother. The first gift was when I saved up and bought my mother the watch she always wanted for her birthday, she was in shock that I remembered that she wanted that watch and she always wears it. The second was when I surprised her with tickets to go and see Andre Rieu this Christmas, as she loves him and always wanted to see him in concert. I may have my days when I have differences with her, but at the end of the day she has always been there for me, and I love surprising her.

My boyfriends sister got me a massive jar of skittles which pretty much beats his present of a DS and FireRed hands down :)

My sister and her boyfriend got me a bunch of purple guitar picks. Purple is my favorite color, and I'd mentioned some time earlier that I could never find purple picks, so they drove to an obscure guitar shop that I didn't even know about and found some for me. It might not sound like much, but it really shows that they know me pretty well.

I'll bet you did! :)

My best gift received would probably be the collection of Ramones music i got way back in the early '90s. Listened to some of those tapes until they broke :).
