the Russian moon program. They tricked the entire Soviet Union into believing that they had never been trying to reach the moon and that they just left it for the Americans. and just where concentrating on making space stations.

Melbournes local newspaper, the Herald Sun, run a joke story back in the 70's about the Westgate bridge which at that time was under construction and said that the two points wouldn't meet up, and people believed them. I think they had to apologise about that stunt...
