Okay, I'm sick and tired of "Halo Reach this" and "Black Ops that" and "Minecraft is god"

they're not really that good...

one's generic, one's REALLY generic, and one's a timesink

now please no flaming about "HALO RULZ AND blah blah blah" because I will dismiss you as a fanboy

the POINT is

what games do YOU love
that are NOT mainstream?

I'm a fan of Armored Core 4, PainKiller, and admittedly TF2.
what are yours?

EDIT: and Amnesia Dark Decent was REALLY good for all those media fans claiming that "Dead Space" is the scariest game ever (it was REALLY FUN but not scary at all)

Eh, I'd say that perhaps TF2 is mainstream.
Anyway, as for my games... Robotech: Battlecry, Robotech: Invasion, the Dawn of War games (Before Dawn of War 2), The Sims 3 (Perhaps), and also perhaps Oblivion.
I quite like/liked all of those games.
So much so that I might buy Oblivion again, but on PC this time.

Minecraft is a Java developed game made by a bedroom programmer. How less mainstream do you want? TF2 is more widespread and mainstream.

Armored Core games are awesome.

Bad Company 2 count? I would be willing to say that it is hands down the best online multiplayer experience I'v had. I hate the monotony of games like Call of Duty, and as a PC gamer, I've never understood the simplicity of Halo. Its also SOOO awesome to ark a bullet into someone's head behind cover. They get mad every, but thats how the game works.

Non-mainstream... Hmm... Does Prototype count?
Super Scribblenauts (and, to be fair, its less super predecessor) has to count! That was both amazing and not entirely mainstream!
Also Limbo.
'Splosion Man
World of Goo
And a lot of other surprisingly good indie games that are lying around the XBLA/ridiculous Steam deals

Yay and Armored Core fan! *high-fives*

I count Bad Company 2, but eeh I'm just asking games.

By Mainstream and Minecraft... I don't know WHY it's so popular, it's no where NEAR as good as it's being given praise for

No offense to the creator but, Really?

on my experience, the Most fun game I've played that is colorful and about cubes and is a GAME (it has objectives unlike a sandbox) is Cubivore

if you don't know what that is...

There, now you do!

Well, isn't that nice? Dismissing people as fanboys while dissing the games they like for no adequate reason.

OT: I don't think F1 2010 is particularly mainstream.

If it is, however... eh... Stranglehold is really fun.

And that one.

Anyway, yeah, I suppose they are a bit mainstream, but I tend not to hear people talking about them on the scale of some of the other games. I suppose it also depends on where we look, and at what time.
For example, of your list, I have heard, and often hear, people speaking of Disgaea and Golden Sun.
I've played the latter, and the sequel, and can't wait for the third game >.>
I even got my hands on a DS, just for that game, and no others >.>

Splosion man, World of Goo, and Prototype I agree with; vastly overlooked games that were great

Scribblenaughts, it may just be me but, it's not really fun, they just had a dictionary and a LOT of free time, however everyone I know got it because "OMG CATHULU!

LIMBO... Abe's Oddesy was better, longer, cheaper, and well yeah. (and was on the PS1)

I'm not saying you're wrong because opinions are well opinions

but if you really liked LIMBO, and willingly parted with $15 for that short of a game, GET ODDWORLD ABE'S ODDESY! (No I can't spell Oddesy properly... sorry)

it's $10 on XBLA (I think) and well it's like limbo only better (in my opinion) but I will give it this, it's not black and white and by emos

Depends on what you mean when you say, "Not Mainstream." Cause the only two games I can really think of are Phoenix Wright (BUY THIS GAME), and Sacred 2 (avoid like the plague) and I'm not sure if they qualify as "Not mainstream".

Agreed

and a good argument I'll put up with, it's that "HALO RULZ AND-" that I won't deal with, if you get offended by my opinion that you make a bland statement and don't back it up with anything other then trolling me because I said the over-hyped space marine isn't as good as you say he is... then yes you are a fanboy

but yeah Indigo Prophecy (or Ferignhight if I'm right [only spelled correctly...]) was fun (if you like Quick-Time events, which I do ^^)

Minecraft is definatly not mainstream. It just got super popular really fast.

For me it's probably Arcanum by Trolka (now defunct). Steampunk rpg goodness.

Minecraft as a game is... lacking. But I play online with a group of friends from school, on our own server run from my friend's basement. It is unbelievably fun. Due to its simplistic nature, there is a whole new level of friendly griefing that can happen. No one teamkilling, or taking XP in any other game. Now, its stuff like erecting large phallic (pun intended) structures in each other's bases. Or covering the entry to someone's base with signs. Or my personal favorite, crafting over 300 fences with the sole purpose of trapping your friend in fences or filling their base with them. Its really what you make of it. And if you make it to be a simple game, its going to be simple.

How did it take that many posts to mention Golden Sun??? Best GBA game of all time!

TF2 is pretty mainstream. Not a CoD or Halo clone, but it's still pretty much your average online FPS with a few wacky extra things. The artistic direction has gone to hell with the updates, too. Still losta fun.

No idea if Homeworld counts, but I'd like it to do.

Back in the days of the PS1, I did in fact play (and love) Abe's Odyssey! I think I still have it somewhere...
The real attraction of Limbo was the profound unsettled feeling I experienced whilst playing it; a feeling I rarely noticed until I stopped playing and realised how severely creeped out I was. But that might just be me. As you say, it's just an opinion
