The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. Such an amazing series, especially the stories about Hell closing down.

Other than that, V for Vendetta and The Watchmen are noteworthy as great works.
Those are pretty much my favorites, plus the Scott Pilgrim Series and "Squee!", a Spin-Off to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

Personally I'm not going to count Japanese Manga into this.

And thus I'll go with:
'The Darkness' by (as of the present) Top Cow comics. Written by Phil Hester and visualised by the awesome style of Michael Broussard.
The series has stretched from the slums of New York, to a tropical island distopia, stopping off for tea in hell before heading towards the Apocalypse.

Transmetropolitan was my first comic love. The sheer oddness of it all made me fall in love, and Spider Jerusalem is a magnificent bastard in a league of his own.
The Goon is also a great series. It's got an incredible mix of humor and seriousness. If you haven't read it, you're missing out big time.

I have a lot of favorites, but one that sticks out is Marvel's "Annihilation" mini series. It was so epic!

The only proper superhero story I really enjoyed was the Death and Return of Superman.
You beat me to it, so i'll mention it's bastard child.
Lucifer which follows what Lucifer did after He closed down hell.[sub]Hint. He creates his own universe![/sub]
This thread makes me smile. :)

Oh god. Lessee...
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. That got me into comics.
Watchmen
Y: The Last Man
V for Vendetta
Coraline (well, the graphic novel version)
The Dark Knight Returns
300
Robota by Doug Chiang and Orson Scott Card (it's prose with images, like The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, but really freaking good art)

And probably a metric ton of other good ones...

Spawn is pretty incredible - really picks up later on. He's definitely one of my favourite anti-heroes in comics/literature.

I probably don't have to say that Sandman is awesome. That's a given.

As for manga, Gantz is really good! Tons of gore and nudity, AND a great social comment and believable characters. Can't be beat. Parasyte was also good in a similar way.

My favorite long running series have been the current run on Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, and Joss Wheadon's run on Astonishing X-Men.

My favorite mini-series (and favorite comic overall) was Silver Surfer: Requiem. I cannot recommend this enough, even to those who may not be interested in the Silver Surfer.

Fables would defintely be up there for favourites series for me, along with Warren Ellis' Web/Print comic Freakangels. Other possibilities would be the first three series' of Runaways, Atomic Robo and all of Udon's Street Fighter series. Ach, and Alan Moore's Top 10. I really, really hope they finish the second season =(

Manga wise, my absolute favourite series is Hunter X Hunter, with the incredible feat which was Pluto a close second. But for pure silly fun you can't beat Azumanga Daioh or Yotsuba&!.

There are times on forums when you are very glad to be ninja'd and only upset that more people haven't ninja'd your idea too.

Preacher, Transmetropolitan and Batman: No Man's Land.

Real comics are the ones you don't have to read backwards.
