Amazingly, I don't have a story to go along with this post, unlike my others.
So basically, what would you say are the greatest guitar riffs ever?

I'm torn between
Iron Man & Crazy Train Ozzy Osbourne
Walk Pantera
Balck Dog Led Zeppelin
Walk This Way Aerosmith & Run DMC

I've probably missed off a few but, what do you guys think?

Where's Led Zepplin's Heartbreaker ? It may not be as well known, but I think it's my favorite LZ song.

Also, Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 is pretty good. I'd even say it's their best song. Linky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp_Now6WDRc

That.

Easily one of the best solo's ever played, played by one the best guitarists to ever live.

Im going with black dog on this one, just because it was one of the choices.
But I'd go with either la grange or slither.

And yes, I knew about ZZ Top before guitar hero 3 came out

Billy Gibbons and his massive beard FTW

One of my personal favourites is 'Plug In Baby' by Muse. It gives me the goosebumps.

Fixed a couple of errors for you.

...and my favourite riff? I'll have to think about that.

Is greatness quantified by how easily its recognized and popularity? Or technical play?
Even though i hate the eagles, the riff from hotel california is awesome. Hells Bells AC/DC must also be mentioned. Ok i just thought of like 10 more, so ill stop here.
Greatness is measured by a mixture of recognition and awesomeness factor. Like, no matter how often you hear it, you still think "That's cool".

From the top of my head:

Aerials - System Of A Down

Welcome To The Jungle - Guns N' Roses

Maybellene I Hofteholder - Volbeat

Y'all Wanna Single - koRn

I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash

San Quentin - Johnny Cash

Run DMC made that song. Listen to it when only Aerosmith play, it's horrible.
And it says Ozzy Osbourne as the group's name (I'm using the Tribute CD) so I wrote that.

I did say I missed some.
Some? You missed the important ones, apart from Walk this Way and Iron Man. Smoke on the Water, Sunshine of your Love, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Sweet Child of Mine, (I cant get no) Satisfaction, Jonny B. Good, You Really Got Me, Oh pretty Woman, Day Tripper, Layla, Purple Haze.

Aerosmith did do "walk this way" with Run DMC, not in the original album version but later on. So no fix there. Its kind of an iconic moment in rock/rap history
Yes, I know. But the riff is due to Aerosmith.

Ah, that's all right then. There's just an important distinction between Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne solo.

...and I like the original album Walk This Way...

How about All of jimi Hendrix? This is a stupid thread because there are so many good ones, its impossible to pick a single one. Personally if I had to pick one from your list, it'd be Crazy train by Ozzy

I'll have to chime in with Life in the Fast Lane by The Eagles. With the exception of Stairway to Heaven, probably one of the most recognizable guitar riffs I know of. Not to mention a personal favorite of mine.
