While I was watching TV tonight I flipped through the channels and saw that Wanted was on. I love the movie and then it got to my favourite bit in it, the gunfight.

It then got me to thinking what is the best movie or TV gunfight? The lobby scene from The Matrix sprung to mind and it is also a great scene but, personally, I believe Wanted's gunfight is the best gunfight I have seen.

So what do you think is the best movie or TV gunfight?

From Heat; the bank robbery shootout in the street. Its so intense. Unfortunately the whole thing isnt on youtube for some reason, but this video has about 75% of it.

Another Micheal Mann film, the club shootout from Collateral. Big spoilers in this one!

Also the sniper scene in Hurt Locker is great.

Hmm, I'd say that some of the gunfights from 'Equilibrium' would have to be up there for me, great shootouts in that movie....

Ok, going out on a limb here, but

So wonderfully OtT, with direction and lighting that's taking itself way too seriously.

I always admired this scene from "Road to Perdition", one of my favourite films.

And then on the completely other end of the spectrum there's this awesome shootout.

I don't know whether or not to hug you for finally showing me that I'm not the only person who thought that scene was about as great as action scenes come, or to be mad because you ninja'd me. >:\

Oh well, I still have the ending shootout to Way of the Gun,

and the teahouse shootout from hardboiled.

I have to go with the classic, Hard Boiled
There was this other scene where the lead character shoot down while he sliding down the rail which the game Max Payne had inspired from when they had that aswell.

Man that scene remind me alot of Time Crisis!

The Matrix Lobby Fight

Maybe not the best, but definitely very entertaining!

The beginning part always puts a smile on this face! (Not a permanent, scarred one though)

I dunno, probably ALL of Shoot 'Em Up.
It's a movie that has a man shoot the handlebars of a merry-go-round at a playground to keep a baby out of a sniper's sights. If it doesn't win best gunfights, it's waaaay up there.

You ninja, you!

Heat is not only one of my all time favorite movies, but it also has my favorite shootout in film history. Bar none.

All two (three) action scenes in that movie were absolutely brilliant. The movie itself was very well done (if a bit mis-advertised) and it takes two watches to fully appreciate it. So two thumbs up from me ( just don't be fooled by the ads, this is not an action movie, even though it has some of the best action in all the movies I've seen).

I'd second this one. Very violent, very chaotic, but very well portrayed. Damn, now I want to watch that film again...

Gotta go with the ending to Unforgiven

Any men don't wanna get killed, better head on out the back :D

Pale rider's final scene is pretty cool, too:

The opening shootout in Star Wars: A New Hope. It represents the unheard of and never again repeated occurrence of Storm Troopers hitting something.

Slightly more seriously, the Matrix lobby scene.

That said, it's a shame the Dark Tower movie hasn't happened yet. The Battle of Tull or the shootout near the Thinny would be bitching.

* Dastardly cackle*

Glad you agree though, the entire film is just wonderful. Di Niro, Pacino, Val Kilmer, wow. Everything about it just works - the cast the soundtrack, the locations, everything. I have a lot of trouble picking favourite films, but yeah - Heat is up there.

Slightly off topic, but what do you reckon your favourite part of the movie is? (difficult, I know :p ) - normally any cover of a Joy Division song ought to be considered sacrilege, but it goes so well with the highway scene, I cant help but choose this:

Yeah, Mann's gunfights are usually pretty masterful. Public Enemies has some great battles too. He seems to capture a really visceral feel to his gunfights - the sound is always spot on and there's usually plenty of dust, bullet-holes, flying masonry fragments and shell casings everywhere. Top notch stuff.

My favorite scene either has to be the famous coffee shop scene or possibly the ending. The final image coupled with this song made for a fucking beautiful ending:
