In contrast, there is no word whether the Lemnians have a problem with Hephaestus' portrayal by Rip Torn in God of War III or the general mangling of Greek myths committed by Sony's series.
Most Lemnians are Greek Orthodox, and could care less about Greek mythology getting mangled. After all, Westerners have been slicing, dicing and skewering Greek mythology ever since Virgil's Aeneid ripped off The Iliad. I'm not sure that variants of the same Greek mytholgical sources have ever been totally properly codified.

I can understand their unease, even if I think they're overreacting, about providing scenarios to people the world over about fighting on their island, escpecially since they're on the Grecian frontier in the Aegean Sea, and Greeks have not had the most cordial relationship with the Turks. 500 years of oppression can kind of do that to you.

First note Im sure there are throngs of people who would think it would be cool as shit to have a video game represent their home town. Mainly because Having a epic shootout in your hometown is only cool when its in video game or paintball form.

Second. People aren't that dumb, there is a very big separation in gamers minds between real and imaginary. If you have trouble defining real and fake I can't help you and stop bringing gaming down with your dumbassery.

Third If a video game company so accuratly represented your defensive structures, then you already have enough national security problems that anyone who wanted in would be setting up on your front lawn. I mean really.

I don't see Germany, France, Russia or the Middle East complaining about their portrayels in games (actually scratch that last one, I think Iran bitched once).....

"We cannot fathom that our island, a place of peace and creation, will be turned into a scene for violence and battle"

"There could possibly be problems with national security."

-Erm, so it's unfathomable the island could be attacked, yet they're worried it could be attacked? Anyone else see the problem with that logic?

:/ Yeah, I can totally see where they're coming from. Liek, I'm totally against Modern Warfare, because they're showing accurate depictions of how to successfully take down the American capital and cripple its military. All I need to do is become a General and train my own secret, special-operations task force, then use it to frame America through a series of contrived coincidences that have less chances of happening than Russia just accidentally firing its "Fire all nukes!" button.

Greek economy in the shitter, massive corruption in government and civil service, and violence in the streets of Athens; but nevermind that, Limnos is slightly upset that they're featured in a video game.

Well it is not exactly like Google Maps. As far as I can tell, it's not only the geography but also the buildings, that are modeled after the real ones pretty closely.

I am Greek and I can see what's happening here. Just the mayor getting all technophobic with no real reason. A lot of time people get irrationally upset about things (it's not only Americans that do it excessively, it seems to be a common problem among human populations around the world), they get emotional because it just doesn't feel right even if it is rationally OK and justifiable.

I thought it was quite funny, Lemnos is a completely non-touristic island (it's one of the most remote in the Aegean Sea), with only a little population, I find it amusing that it was randomly chosen by the game studio. Perhaps they were expecting no-one would react precisely because it's such a small place? I also think it's funny that they're worrying about these things at this time, but then again Turkey has been very aggressive the past weeks.
I have a mate who's family comes from Lemnos, and who still own a property over there. His father still lives there, and guess what..... we're going to be defending his homeland to the bitter end the day ArmA III comes out. No to mention he can show me around in the game :)

I love that it almost seems they're treating Greek Mythology with the seriousness involved in legitimate religion.
Oh, and I guess I should say...
Inb4 legitimacy of religion flamewar
Its just as "legitimate" as other religions. Not that I'd actually describe any of them as legitimate, but still - trying to make a distinction is rather fruitless.

BillP , riddle me this then...

Lets examine the source of the photos that Bohemia used to make the scenerio.
If it was google maps, then its already publicly available material and as such will have zero further impact as a secuirity risk... its unlikely that the devs having spent millions on the production of the game would simply download a few google images to reconstruct the game world, especially as they are so proud of the authenticity of thier productions.

The other likely source is to go visit the site and take numerous photos, with high quality equipment... equipment that would be damn hard to hide from any form of security.
I would imagine that the photo shoot would of taken a week or two, required using some of the local resources and been a relatively intresting piece of news for the locals, least hitting the local papers.

I cant imagine that the local security and authorities not knowing whats going on, and as such I think its a blatant cash grab to wait till the product is nearly completed before kicking up such a fuss over it...

... why did they wait till now to complain to the developers, why not deny them access to do the photo shoots or at minimal check the material did not reveal sensitive data ?

Well I grew up in lemnos and my parents still live there so I also want to play this game and try to find my house or the other property that I own in the island.

Sweet, I already checked with my mate and he's jumped on the idea, so if you get it then the 3 of us can defend the island :)
