So, I am in college. I am also in a fraternity. Is anyone else in a fraternity, or was in one in college, or wants to be in one? Just curious.

God no, i always get hounded by fraternity dudes trying to get me to join. I get the benefits of being in one, but for some reason the people in any ive ever been invited to have always pissed me off. Sorry if i sound high and mighty on this subject, they just irk me for some reason.
I understand. Sometimes fraternity guys can be dicks about wanting to get people to join.

No.

As a matter of fact, My unversity has banned all things like Greek Life, etc.

Funnily enough, this year the student body voted 76% to keep the rules the way they are, up 8% from last year. Something I am very grateful for.

But... John Belushi...
(Ill complete that sentence)

...was in a movie that was based solely on fraternity stereo-types and could not be farther from the truth.
all stereotypes are true at some point in time.

Most of the frat boys I seen were pretty much uppity pricks who thought they were superior by virtue of being in a frat.

Correction: was in a movie that established those stereotypes. :p

Seriously though, it's called humor. Look it up.

edit: How are the suvlakis?

I think you mean "are based on a grain of truth." To say "all stereotypes were true at some point" means that at one point all [insert ethnic group here] were [insert non-flattering trait here]. Logically, that doesn't fly.

Its correct if you take it to mean that at some point in history there existed a group of people who acted in the manner of said stereotype, thus leading to said stereotype for that entire group of people.

also, are you stalking me, and if so,

stop it I dont swing that way.

My university doesn't have any Greek life, and it's university policy that none can be established. There was a referendum last year over whether or not the student society should continue to support that position, and I think students voted it down. Either way, there's no Greek life at my uni and it doesn't look like there will be anytime soon. It also doesn't look like anybody gives a flying fuck at all, since there are a couple of clubs that are big enough to be pretty much equivalent.

1) That's not always going to be correct, because it's not always going to be completely true. A large contributor to stereotypes, I'd imagine, would be xenophobia. A fear of the outgroups you don't belong to.

As an example: I don't believe there's ever been a time where all Jews were crafty and morally unscrupulous. Many worked as business owners and money lenders, and that's what the stereotype's based on, but it doesn't mean that the stereotype itself has ever been true.

2) I'm not stalking you. I just respond to posts that attract my attention. If I disagree with something you said, chances are, we'll happen to disagree about other stuff too. I'm not trying to single you out, dude. I rarely pay attention to usernames in posts I'm commenting on.

In Scotland so no Greek Life here as far as I'm aware. I think its quite a good concept, though all I have to go on is Animal House(I kid), but on further reading it does look like it has its advantages

well, I think most of the bans on greek life were meant to curb the (supposed?)excess that the organization brings.

Though as you can tell from my previous reply, I am biased.

Don't want to be in a frat, and funny enough the first frat party I was invited to was a toga party. In all honesty, to me a Frat/Sorority is a place where you buy friends.
