I might be the only person who likes both punk rock and American Idiot. The new album (21st Century Breakdown) is actually pretty good as well.

That said, it's no less overplayed or poppy than American Idiot was by any stretch. Actually, it's basically more so since they are copying themselves in this case.

Haha, a very well worded post, nice usage of the word 'dookie'!

I like some of their old songs but for the most part, BLEGH.

I reviewed the CD elsewhere and I think it's a bloated, overpolished turd of a record with average song writing, none of the humour that made the previous records great and it's generally trying to be epic, which it clearly isn't.

I disagree; I think it's their most well thought out, best produced piece. The songwriting is much more mature than their earlier work, even more so than American Idiot. Yeah, it may not be as humorous as their earlier work, but that was fifteen years ago, they've grown older and wiser (sorta). The music itself has branched out from the Dookie days and you can hear loads of classic rock influence in it. But I suppose if your a deep Dookie fan, that's probably the opposite of what you want. Either way, I like it just as much as I like Dookie and American Idiot.

But that's not what made old Greenday DECENT. It was their lack of care for conventional lyrics and songwriting that made them stand out. Now... now they're just another bullshit pop group.

There is only room enough for one person on the escapist to have tracer bullet, and its not you. You have been warned.

Also ill suspend judgment until i hear the entire album.
First of all I was inspired by you. And it is in the process of being changed as of now. Also the whole album is relatively good. 21 Guns, Viva La Gloria, and Know Your Enemy are highlights

Not really. I wouldn't put them in a group with, say, Fallout Boy or Maroon 5 or any of those crap bands. I don't really see the lyrics as having changed that much; they've just matured in age. Pete Townshend wasn't writing songs about his generation fifteen years into his career. The Beatles had gone a long way from 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' by the end of the sixties. Bands change when they've been around as long as Green Day has. Overall, though the songwriting hasn't changed that much. It's still mostly three to four chord songs, the only difference now is there are more instruments than the guitar-bass-drum combo of the nineties. Lyrically, it's a bit ambitious, yeah, but you can't fault them for growing up a bit. They can't keep making Dookie for fifteen years on.

This CD is not Green Day. I am a huge fan, and will be until I die, but this CD and American Idiot were so far from what they used to be. Sometimes that's not a bad thing, but in this case, I believe it is. I feel like they've become the very thing they used to be sing out against, and while everyone has to grow up sometime, they've gone a little to far.

There's nothing wrong with doing side projects. Foxboro Hot Tubs were amazing, and it was just Green Day with a different name and different sound. When I think of Green Day I think of 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, Kerplunk, Dookie, and Warning (I didn't want to list all of the CDs, those are just my favorites), not the super popular, catering to the masses garbage I personally think it's become.

And finally, the thing last thing I take issue with is Billie Joe's guitar playing. He's playing rhythm now. WTF. I loved his guitar playing, and At the Library is still one of my favorite songs of all time because of his amazing use of harmonics. The three person band was amazing, and I died a little inside watching the 21 Guns video and Billie Joe playing the rhythm guitar during the solo. Even in a music video.

This has gone on long enough, but I personally feel like they need to remember their roots a little. Yes they're crazy famous now, but they started playing at Gilman and that's when they were writing their best stuff. In my opinion.

Listen to both albums side by side. They are not even close to the same thing, in sound and overall talent, and unfortunately 21st Century Breakdown is not a return to their glory days. It's a direct sequel of American Idiot. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for their next CD though.
