Technically the ring is technology, isn't it?

It was only the 'original' Green Lantern in which the ring was magical.
I think it's a mix of technology and magic.

The ring is advanced technology, powered by an ancient Green Lantern magic.

Still, I doubt the game will be a success. In the best case, it will be a weak guy with a powerful ring and Prototype-like powers (where you choose a shape and purpose of the form in a radial menu and swing with it). In the worst case, we will have:

a) function to shoot beams
b) shield
c) form of transport

So I think that anyone who would like to play as a real Green Lantern would have to wait till Champions Online...

This is news worthy? It would be more worth noting if they were NOT going to make a game based on the movie.

Games tied to movies tend to suck but if they've already started on it and the movie isn't out for 2 years then it should be good.

Oh for fuck's sake, I beg of you, Double Helix, don't fuck this up. It's already pretty much doomed to fail because it's a movie tie-in game, but the two positive factors from this is that development is starting now, and Double Helix is a merger company, one of the companies being Shiny Entertainment, who are amazing (Sacrifice, anyone?).

Best of luck to the movie; don't fuck it up!
Despite the slight mix of magic and technology, the rings are pretty much technology.

The only one who had a ring that was entirely magic was Alan Scott, but no one cares about Alan Scott unless he's doing something Checkmate related.

I'm not getting my hopes up either due to it being a bloody movie tie-in, but still the possibilities for GL are pretty much almost endless, unless they break the rules.

Oh shit wait, wasn't one of the rules that they couldn't kill? No flame-thrower for me then. >_>

as cool as the game sounds i'm not sure how good it will be and i think the ring's power will be limited in what you can create
It will probably be limited to a light melee attack, a heavy melee attack and maybe a laser/thowing attack. Which is virtually nothing considering the ring can do pretty much anything the wearer wants it to.

And also that they "protect the wielder from mortal harm." So, no way to get your character killed if they keep that one.

But they also eventually run out of power don't they? So you could certainly die if the ring runs out of power, it's just going to be interesting how they keep the balance.

So long as it's not regenerating health...

Green Lantern nerd mode: activated

originally the rings had unlimited energy for 24 hours (Or however long the Lantern's home planet day was.) but had an extra emergency supply of energy that would save the user even if the 24 hours were up, though a Lantern could do a sort of override and force the ring to use up the energy for something else.

Nowadays the rings have a set amount of energy they draw from the lantern and each use uses up some of the energy, like a gas tank. I think it might still have the emergency energy supply, but I'm not sure.

Well, the first thing to look at is the games the developer has made...all two of them. Silent Hill: Homecoming and G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. One of those is considered decent. The other one...not so much.

However, if they take Green Lantern to its full potential, they could make their first truly great game. Of course, Shiny Entertainment is involved, which ruined Matrix games with Enter the Matrix, so I may be overly optimistic. Then again, Path of Neo wasn't bad.
