Grim Determination and Fallout 3

When playing Fallout 3, I never quite feel as though I'm "enjoying myself" in the same way as I am when I'm, say, killing fecal demons in Demon's Souls or dropping Predator missiles on Russkies hiding out in a Burger King World in CoD4MW2. It's not the same kind of heart-pounding, adrenaline-coursing, sphincter-clenching "fun."

Rather, I feel grimly set to the tasks before me, confident that my time spent helping Wastelanders will not be for naught, but still not exactly jumping with glee. I've put probably 100 hours into the game, too; by no means do I feel that the game is flawed. I'm wondering, however, whether this is a universal experience. Does everyone else feel like adopting a determined, furrowed scowl when leaving Megaton and heading toward a super mutant encampment? Or are there people playfully romping around Post Apocolyptia?

I don't think heart-pounding adrenaline-coursing fun is the point of Fallout 3..

I loved the free roaming and feeling of "oh whats going to kill me now? A giant scorpion? brilliant".
I guess I dont share your view, except I felt that the actual main story mission was more of a chore than the rest of the game.

I love the game, I own it on both the PS3 and the PC because I enjoy it so much. But I do know what you mean, it can impose a aura of bleakness onto you, which, it should really considering the circumstances of the game.

It's not a fun game. But that doesn't mean it isn't good. The main satisfaction is exploring the desolate landscape, trying to scratch out a living.

Maybe to be more clear and less wordy, the immersion aspect, for me, was one that made me grit my teeth and hard-nosedly accept the bleak environment. What I'm getting as is whether this is commonly felt (and I'm getting the gist that it is) or if some players out there prefer to smile and happily blast things away instead.

The atmosphere is what makes that game: the people you encounter, the tools at your disposal, the enemies you face, and the ironic 50s charm. You really feel like it's you (and maybe your dog) against this unforgiving world. Plus, the VATS system can be immensely satisfying.

I dunno, it feels kinda less like a game than the previous Fallout games and more like a kind of drudge through psudo-reality, to me.
