I think it would be interesting if they dropped the "O" from MMO.

But then again, that may imply a several hundred thousand person LAN party.
[sub] Which would be awesome. [/sub]

If its an RPG then it is an MMORPG otherwise its just an MMOG. Most MMOGs I have seen are MMORPGs though. If it really upsets you then just become a grammar Nazi explain why the offender is wrong. It'll make you feel better even if it doesn't change anything.

Wait, I don't see the OP's point. Are you telling us to say MMo instead? Because that contradicts what you said after that.

Maybe it's because Yahtzee popularized pronouncing the full thing "muh-more-puh-guh" so people here like to go with it? I just use MMO as it's 3 letters less and thusly more convenient.
Thats actually what I sorta thought
An MMORPG is a type of MMO. A MMOFPS is another type, and a MMORTS is yet another.

As previous poster said, I used to use the phrases MMORTS and MMOFPS, especially when playing Starcraft. Now that multiplayer across a wide network is pretty much a given for games of these genres, the term "MMO" has become superfluous for them. Therefore, it is reasonable that MMO can refer to MMORPGs, which still differentiates them from single-player RPGs. However, to say that MMORPG is redundant is to say the United States of America is redundant because it's often shortened to the United States or America.

MMO is just Massively Multiplayer Online.

MMORPG is Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

There are plenty of MMOs that arnt RPGs but iv only herd MMORPG used to describe games like World of Warcraft or DnD Online.
So it doesn't bug me because that's what they are.

What else can I say.

well everquest is classified as an mmorpg, but they aren't just limited to it, like huxley or combat arms, those are mmofps, so sometimes you've just got to be more specific

I would consider games like Fallout, Borderlands.. a FPSRPG.. so when/if they have a game like that online you guys would prefer adding MMORPGFPS to it? Fallen Earth is already out and is exactly that, but MMO fits it fine.

I think saying Eve is a great MMO is fine instead of adding MMO(Space Sim Roleplaying Game) or even Darkfall as a MMO(First Person Roleplaying Game)

As for:

MMO = X
MMORPG = Y

I think there needs to be a distinction between having 2 M's verses not. I mean doesn't any game having online capabilities automatically include the two M's by that logic? A game where you can go online is different from MMO. To me RTSs, TBSs, and alot of FPS's would not really be MMO. But rather just have the ability to play online. Battlefield I would probably consider a MMOFPS, MW2 is really right on the line. IMO it could go either way. I wouldn't call NWN a MMORPG. It is just an RPG with the ability to play online. Diablo isn't an MMOHnS, it is just a HacknSlash/Treasure Hunter with online capabilities.

I would say a game earnss its two M's if the entire premise of the game rests on multiplayer. Whereas there is no (or minimal single player) and virtually all of the community around the game only care about the multiplayer.

You're comparing the term MMORPG to terms like "ATM Machine". You're insinuating that MMORPG is the same as saying MMORPG RPG, which it isn't.

MMORPG stands for 'Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game'. MMO by itself is just a general term for 'Massively Multiplayer Online' games in which multiple types of games fall under, MMOFPS for example.

You can use MMO as a term for MMORPG's but it isn't a term exclusive to that genre.

I think that last chaos is great free MMORPG game, that i recommend.Its very interesting fantasy game.Many says that Last Chaos is too simple, but i dont think that way.You can easily find a pet and have lots of friends.You can play minigame LaCaRete, where you can win some awesome prizes with tokens.But that is just my opinion.Everyone has their own game taste.
But if youre interested, you should check Aeria Games website.There is lots of other games.
Have fun!:)http://www.aeriagames.com
This looks like a spam bot to me. Should I report it?

MMO is a superset of MMORPG

MMO would be ALL mass multiplayer games, RPGS, Action, Racing ect. so an MMORPG would be just a part of ALL mmo games

I am saying when describing an online game like EQ2, WoW, Eve, Darkfall, Tabula Rasa.. you can just get away with saying MMO to describe what kind of game it is thats all. You dont have to use the entire drawn out overly expressive term MMORPG, MMOFPSG, MMORPFPSG or whatever the actual thing can be called.. or type the whole thing out instead of abbreviating it to all those letters. And as the title says its just a gripe I have with people using those long terms for something thats been shortened down years ago.
