this "Gritty Realism" you speak of is just the natural evolution of the Genre.

When Id started the FPS Genre, they would have gone with "Gritty Realism" if they could.

Each graphical upgrade has bringing the genre closer to "gritty realism"

I put the term in quotes because it's a fucking stupid term. It's just what FPS's are, and have always wanted to be. It's not some new development. The same people making FPS's today have been the ones making them and playing them for years. It's exactly what an FPS player wants. If you don't like it, then FPS is probably just not the Genre for you.

I have noticed that the game market right now is very much into the whole gritty realism genre. Games like Halo, Bioshock, Mass effect, Half Life, Gears of war and others have become a minority. Nowadays the most common type of game is dark in colour, gritty and ultra realistic. In all honesty I actually find it hard to tell them apart sometimes, Call of Duty 4, Far cry 2, Battlefield 2 modern combat, Battlefield bad company, Medal of Honour airborne, Call of Duty 5 the list just goes on.
What? What the hell are you smoking? Call of Duty 4 doesn't conform to gritty realism, nor does Far Cry 2, or any of the other games that you've outlined. You must have a really skewed sense of what makes for realism.

Now, games like Operation Flashpoint, ArmA: Armed Assault, the earlier Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games - that's closer to realism. But Call of Duty 4? No.
I was thinking the same thing exactly. I guess the OP is talking about games with a gritty-realistic style rather than any realistic substance. Either that or, like you said, he's smoking some pretty strong stuff.

Yes I am talking about style not substance.

How is Battlefield: Bad Company gritty or realistic? You take a billion bullets to the head which are healed by a stab into you chest and the game is suppose to be funny. Also, Call of Duty 4 isn't that gritty. Even if it isn't the most colorful game around, Call of Duty 4 still has more colors then most games today.
I found BF:BC to suffer from the gritty realism that the OP seems to be talking about. For me it wasn't about the amount of bullets it took to down an enemy. It was the art direction (and the fact alot of the enemies looked exactly like the MC) I found to be disturbing. The only being able to carry 1 weapon (or 2 if it came with a sniper rifle) and the enemy choices themselves. I like fighting evil mutated aliens and the likes. I am not a fan of realistic war sims (COD RV6 and games like that). Give me a GOW or a FEAR and I am happy

Gritty Realism's ok in smal ldoses but nothing beats something so ludicrous as Just Cause or Saints Row 2
