basically this. Hollywood is doing granth theft meme to gain copyright and trademark on it and thus everyone that uses it will ahve to pay them (not the meme owners mind you, but the filmmakers) for their usage. after this the image in the article would probably be illegal without royalties too.

I really wonder why its taken this fucking long for Hollywood to grab up any of the meme's for profit. Usually they're on the ball when it comes to exploiting and watering down things that were once funny.

Oh, they tried getting memes into movies, in fact multiple movies now refer and even show memes now, pretending to be hip about it. Still usually in these movies the "obviously bad internet addict guy" end up the best character of the bunch.

also this kind of reminds me how they turned Fred into a movie/TV show/toy, but he wasn't a meme per se

also also, memes come and go real fast so might as well have them go out in a blaze of glory and a pile of cash by making a movie out of them on the tail end of their popularity

It doesn't seem any dumber than the ideas for most family movies.
A cat that's grumpy? Sure, you can make a movie out of that. It won't be any good, but movies like that get made all the time, and I just ignore them.

Think of it like the movie TED but with a cat.

Really you just take any film with an adorably furious protagonist and make them a cat instead of a person.

so they basically want to do a clone of garfield.

I feel Garfield and Tard are considerably different kinds of anthropomorphised cat.
