I have gamefly to avoid having to pay for every single game, and have loaded my Q full of games that seem good but i don't want to buy. One of the games is GTA 4. I was wondering if the game is good enough and takes long enough that i should just go ahead and buy it or to just use gamefly

I found GTA 4 to be a fun game, although considering previous titles in the series it was a little disappointing at how much they sacrificed for "realism". I don't think it is anything special to be honest, but going through the story once and messing around in free-mode for a while is worth a go.

It's worth a rent at least.

Dude. It's like...$10-$20 now. I'd just buy it anyway.

It's good, overall. And you can turn off the phonecalls everyone keeps pissing about. The in-game phone has a sleep mode 95% of players seemed to miss.

hmm... i wouldn't recommend getting it at all personally. With regards to the other GTA games it was pretty poor, i got bored of it.

GTA4 is pretty controversial. It took out a lot of of what seemed to personify the series thus far, but replaced it with much more besides. Personally, I regard it as perhaps the best game of this generation: I've put so much time into it, and it keeps being fun. The story missions are spot-on (if a little repetitive), and the sandbox is rammed with stuff to do.

tl;dr get it and love it.

It was not all that fun. I got bored mid way through it.

I did like how the vehicles handled though. That was probably my favorite part of the game.

If you like the GTA games buy it.
I didn't find it that fun, bought it anyways though. Damn you steam and your holiday sale! How could I not buy it?!

I have no idea what Gamefly is but it doesn't sound legal.
Online game rental service, via mail.

Totally legal. Used to have it.
I see, thank you. In which case I shall edit my post.

I'm leaning towards buying it.

The game may be more realistic but over its a pretty good game. And it has a great story and characters.

I really liked it, but You should see it as more of a interactive crime Adventure game with a sandbox attached then a sandbox game.

Broken framerate

Awful clunky controls

Escort missions

Retarded turning circle

Idiotic friendly AI

Escort missions

Friend mechanic

No mission checkpoints

Irritating, slow save mechanic

And more Escort missions.

Yet despite all of this I did enjoy the game a lot... it has heart, a pretty good story and Liberty City is very cool to exlore.

Not to mention the fun you can have with friends if playing it online.

Seriously, nothing makes me happier then having three other people in your car, firing at police cars chasing you while you pull a series of awesome stunts that make them go 'Oh Christ!'.

But that actually leads into my point about this being my favourite driving I've ever seen in a game. Some people say that the cars handle like crap in this game, all I have to say to them is learn how to drive it. You can pull some extreme stuff off with cars when you realize you have to slow down a second to nail those tight turns. I've mastered the ability to flip my car 180 degrees while driving without a problem. What I mean by that is, I can be going foward, whip my car around, and start reversing while losing only a bit of speed, shoot through the windshield of a cop behind me, then swerve my car back around to go forward. It makes you feel like you're in an incredibly action movie.

Then you have the DLCs which each add in their own new experiences. Lost and the Damned upgrades the multiplayer from the original, making everything that was good in it great, while the multiplayer for Ballad of Gay Tony focuses more on changing the experience to that of a more chaotic one with tanks, attack helicopters, and the reintroduction of skydiving.

All in all an amazing installment. My advice, purchase it. But purchase the original though, and not the Episodes from Liberty City. Then download the other DLCs later. Reason being, you can't play Lost and the Damned with people who had it in the DLC format, only disc.

If you're going in for a more over-the-top experience with a lot more bangs and high-flying adventure, spare yourself the trouble and just pick up The Lost and Damned/The Ballad of Gay Tony in Liberty City Episodes.

That said, if you have your heart set on GTA IV, it's a pretty enjoyable game with a lot to do and well worth the money, as it is relatively cheap now.

However, if you're looking into online, The Ballad of Gay Tony is way more enjoyable, as it introduces more elements akin to San Andreas Multiplayer (SA-MP) like parachutes, bigger weaponry, and tanks.

Definitely worth the time and money since it pretty inexpensive now. Despite all the flaws, it's still a relatively enjoyable game.

GTA IV has an excellent story and script, but it's plodding, boring, and nearly unplayable at spots (especially when trying to walk, shoot, drive, steal things, buy things, go places, stay put, call your friends, ignore your friends, do missions, free-roam, play minigames, or go to sleep). Make of that what you will.

Actually, let me make something of it for you: just go watch the cutscenes on Youtube and save yourself some dough.

Also, it takes about 50 hours to finish.
