GTA Movie Definitely NOT in the Works

In every GTA game, the story portrays the main character as a sympathetic character that only resorts to crime because society has often been harsh to him. Then, as soon as the cutscenes end and you are in control of him, off he goes and murders thousands of people just to see if he can. That's why a GTA movie won't work, the gameplay-story segregation is too strong. If you make the movie's story based on the basic GTA character, you won't have an excuse for showing him doing the mass murdering the game is known about. If you try to tailor the movie around such a scene, then the end result won't look like GTA at all. And if you show a psychotic guy that goes around stealing cars, running over people and then eventually firing rockets at armored police choppers, then it automatically becomes a Saints' Row movie.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, they legally can never make a Grand Theft Auto. In 1977 a film was released called "Grand Theft Auto" by New World Films and directed by Ron Howard. Now I think Fox Atomic owns the rights to the movie and they've signed a contract saying basically "Rockstar can never make a Grand Theft Auto motion picture, and Fox Atomic can never make a Grand Theft Auto video game."

Technically a movie could be released, but it would have to be produced and distributed by Fox. shudder...

But Rockstar and Fox teaming up would be the only way I see this happening.

Fox could always simply neglect to notice that the movie was being made until waaaay too late to stop it's production and then take them to court and threaten them with delays or preventing the release so that they got a nice tidy percentage of the profits without having to do anything themselves. You know, like they did with Watchmen.

Despite making games that are essentially homages to The Godfather and ever other organized crime flick, I'm glad that the guys at Rockstar have enough of the creative artist persona to want to maintain control over their idea even if it changes into a medium they're unfamiliar with. Unlike any of the companies that thought Uwe Boll was a good idea. Well, to be fair, the first company really couldn't have known. But everyone after that, they screwed that pooch all on their own.

All GTA games are based on movies anyway.
How would they make a movie outta that?
Well, they did make a small GTA2 movie once, Rockstar did it, i liked it.
They might be able to do it for there other games, as long as THEY keep complete control over it.

What i really want to see is a Saints Row(2) movie(s).

As every gamer knows, video game movies are almost universally bad; Silent Hill sucked
This is making me visit this homepage max. half as often as I did before. I'm not joking. The Silent Hill movie caught the atmosphere of the original as good as any movie could. Sure, it didn't catch the genius of the games, but that's not even possible in a medium that only tells 1 1/2 - 2 hours worth of story.

I'm glad that we can live peacefully, knowing that Uwe Boll is not going to butcher another franchise in to a movie which is missing every little thing that made the game good.
I dunno, Postal was the only uwie [haha, getit?] that I liked. for a movie based on a game where the first mission is to cash your paycheck and buy milk, it was pretty funny, even when uwe made fun of himself and the RWS guy beat the hell out of him.

but yea, GTA would be a directors worst nightmare unless they tend to introduce a new IP city.
Nitpick: Uwe is supposed to be pronounced "Oo-vay".

Ot: I think Rockstar could pull this one off, as their games tend to play out similarly to a movie already, but for the sake of condensing they would need to probably use a original script.

Boll actually talks about the way a GTA film could be made in an interview he did with LoadingReadyRun, and the strange thing is that his analysis comes across as totally normal and rational, he almost has you believing that he could do it very competently.

I have yet to work out how he manages to cock up every film he has ever been in charge of. Ah well, you have to give the man points for trying I suppose.

But on topic, this is probably a good thing. I could see a GTA movie easily working if done properly, but I can't really see any reason for it to be made in the first place - it would just be another gangster movie with a tagline from a popular video game series tagged onto the title. It certainly wouldn't be bringing anything new to the world of cinema, that's for sure.

I think we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Yes, Uwe "I make laughable piles of shit" Boll won't be getting his grubby paws into this one anytime soon. Besides, Rockstar has at least enough worldly wiseness to know that one should never allow an intellectual property into the hands of Mr. Boll.

"We don't believe that the Grand Theft Auto games, which are massive in scope and structurally complex"

What the fuck game has this guy been playing? Sure they've got sandbox in there, but there's always some rigid and shitty story about someone we don't give a fuck about to ruin it all.

And nothing of value was lost...

This is some of the best news I've had in a while, which is actually kinda sad, there's not much I can say that hasn't been expressed already, but I need to express how fucking good this news is.

That's a relief. And on the topic of game-based movies I think the best one ("the best one" doesn't mean it actually has to be good) is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete... Yep...

Thank you Rockstar for seeing that for games to truly become an art form they must have some integrity.

Wait why the fuck did everyoe hate the Resident Evil movies? I thought they and Silent Hill where good movies. As far as movies go.
Why the fuck would Rockstar even atempt to make GTA a movie. Sure GTA has a storyline but seriously who gives a rats ass about the character. GTA is all about being a douchebag. Not the stuff movies are made of, unless your going to make it a Jackass rip off.
