We seriously have to still be having threads like this? Artists need to be able to put whatever in their work that they feel is true to the work. I wrote a short essay (in March 2006) about the modern political reality in America where Patrick Henry was tortured - is that to be condemned too? Am I a bad person for communicating reality to other human beings?
According to the Housers and whoever else made that creative decision, torture is part of their vision for their exaggerated simulation of the American Dream. As long as it's not gratuitous, we have no place in saying it shouldn't be there.
