I recentley purchased GTA4 and to tell the truth I was severley dissapointed.

The problems started with the protagonist and his story, Niko is an unlikable charachter and his story is unoriginal and it really didn't make me want to play the game seeing as the story is sorted out halfway through when he finds that "Special someone" and that was unsatisfying to say the least.

Moving away from Niko we look at the visuals, the world is grey, boring and New York so no marks there, the cars and populace are nic though so it's not all that bad.

Now for my main point...comparing it to the older entries in the series first off we look at Vice City, the game was funny, colurful, unique and full of silly weapons and missions like the awesome RC helicopter sabotage mission or the bombing of the coffee shop in the mall. San Andreas next which as we know was the biggest and possibly greatest of the series, the game had it all Street racing, buying proprty, girlfreinds, RPG style stats, car custimisation the works, and for some reason GTA4 decided to not include half of this which is what really dissapointed me the fact that a current gen GTA had less stuff than it's last gen relatives.

I was expecting a more lengthy review :p But I agree totally man.. gta4 is the only gta (excluding 1 and 2) that i never bothered to complete the story mode in..I just got bored of it.. and it annoys me that the DLC costs 1600 friggin MS points.. double what other games charge

I enjoyed the game regardless of the changes, although I agree it would have been better if they had included more of the content from SA.

Also on a side note I'm a PS3 owner so no DLC for me :(

And sorry SpikeyJoey but I just did this while I was waiting for Monty Python to come on.

I never got all the hate that GTA4 brought forth. To me it's a game that does good in almost every of its aspects and that's rarely seen in videogames. Also, I found Nico to be a far more interesting character than any other GTA protagonist ever put together. But that's not saying much.

I absolutely loved GTA4 when it first came out.

Since Saint's Row 2, though, I can't go back to it. GTA4 just seems too dark and brooding, while Saint's Row is hilarious and charming.

Same with me. Thanks buddy who got SR2 for me.

And also thank the 360 that wrecked my GTA IV disc...

I was disappointed, TC (with your 'review). Grand Theft Auto IV is not a game that can be reviewed in only four paragraphs.

Both GTA4 and SR2 suck on PC. GTA4 sucks on anything but PCs that can run Crysis in 1680x1050 on max details and 16x AA with v-sync, SR2 sucks on all PCs.

Personally I agree with everything you said. But you forgot to mention the endlessly boring escort missions. And hanging out with your friends... *shudder*. To quote Yahtzee, is this Grand Theft Auto, or Grand Theft Normal Boring Life?

Can't say that some of the posts above aren't true but without thinking about the super strengh trees and the 'like' and 'respect' stats it still is a pretty decent game.

Bought GTA:IV?
Dissapointed with the lack of things to do after finishing the game?
Welcome to the club. :)
I think that almost anyone who enjoyed the huge scope of GTA: San Andreas was left with expectations that GTA:IV wasn't going to live up to.
Rockstar basically traded awesome side missions and a huge interesting environment for some brilliant graphics and a movie styled story line.
I'll stay with San Andreas thanks!

Wacth Yahtzee's review of GTA4, Saint's Row 2, and ZP Awards. He criticises it.

I disagree with just about everything you said, I thought Niko was a great character with some actual depth, and that the story was among the best this generation. Besides the gameplay was very good, the shooting felt natural, comparing it to the previous GTA games, where the gameplay seemed more like an afterthought.

I can agree that it lacked some small things like car customization, but it doesn't really matter, since there's still a lot of stuff to do after you finish the game, like the multiplayer, which was amazing.

GTA was the most overhyped game of the decade and it died out almost instantly, this was the only game that was completely sold out in my town and when I finally got it it was poor

Niko was the first rounded GTA character. He had feelings and wasn't a complete bloody psycho.

He was a normal fellow who got caught up with the wrong people. What's so wrong with making the protaganist a human?

Your points are mostly the same as with most people who dislike the game (Though I disagree with you about Niko and the story). Rockstar took a different tone to this game than its predecessors. It is much more serious and realistic. I personally love it for that and think they did an amazing job with it, but some people want it to be a crazy funny wild going-around-shooting-the-hell-out-of-everything game. For those people, there is Saints Row 2.

This.

Some people refuse to look at it from the point of realism. Its humour is much more subtle and plays out through its cast of stereotypes.
