I recentley purchased GTA4 and to tell the truth I was severley dissapointed.

The problems started with the protagonist and his story, Niko is an unlikable charachter and his story is unoriginal and it really didn't make me want to play the game seeing as the story is sorted out halfway through when he finds that "Special someone" and that was unsatisfying to say the least.

Moving away from Niko we look at the visuals, the world is grey, boring and New York so no marks there, the cars and populace are nic though so it's not all that bad.

Now for my main point...comparing it to the older entries in the series first off we look at Vice City, the game was funny, colurful, unique and full of silly weapons and missions like the awesome RC helicopter sabotage mission or the bombing of the coffee shop in the mall. San Andreas next which as we know was the biggest and possibly greatest of the series, the game had it all Street racing, buying proprty, girlfreinds, RPG style stats, car custimisation the works, and for some reason GTA4 decided to not include half of this which is what really dissapointed me the fact that a current gen GTA had less stuff than it's last gen relatives.
Not a review.

Try again, for real, and I'll actually give you constructive criticism.

Your points are mostly the same as with most people who dislike the game (Though I disagree with you about Niko and the story). Rockstar took a different tone to this game than its predecessors. It is much more serious and realistic. I personally love it for that and think they did an amazing job with it, but some people want it to be a crazy funny wild going-around-shooting-the-hell-out-of-everything game. For those people, there is Saints Row 2.
This.

Some people refuse to look at it from the point of realism. Its humour is much more subtle and plays out through its cast of stereotypes.
Ah, yes. I forgot to mention that GTA4 is indeed quite funny as well, but it takes a different (and in my opinion more mature) angle, as FanofDeath described.

I've never played GTA4, but San Andreas is amazing. Also GTA4 looks like it takes things too seriously, what with the pointlessly realistic graphics. Plus from what I've heard it has less weapons, less cars and a smaller map. Doesn't seem like a recipe for brilliance to me.

Niko was the first rounded GTA character. He had feelings and wasn't a complete bloody psycho.

He was a normal fellow who got caught up with the wrong people. What's so wrong with making the protaganist a human?
I thought that the bloody psycho character suited GTA more than the guy who has a conscience, it just seems to contradict itself when you beat up a hooker and steal her money.

I liked the story and the main character but the game itself was bloody boring. Been there, done that. I absolutely HATED "hanging out with your buddies" stuff. I bought a gangster simulator becouse I wanted to shoot things, rob things, have fun. What I got was some gangster version of sims. Also the game was unfairly stretched, making the player to drive from one side of the city to the other to shoot one guy. After that you had to go back and repeat everything. Also I hated that I had to wait for some missions to become avaible. At the end I was just hoping for this game to end quickly, I was so bored with it.

I do agree, San Andreas was just so much better than GTA IV, It's a disimprovement really.
And GTA IV does have Street racing.

Meh. I enjoyed the game. I pretty much disagree with everything you said.
i back that up. its nice to have a true sand box game where you can happily, and repeatedly, spend 4 hours trying to get to the start of the next check point and not make it, having got to 5 stars and been riddled by the FIB and still consider it time well spent!

not the best game ever, but certainly in the top 5 :)

(oh and the cars handled like real cars, if you dislike braking for corners i strongly suggest you never go near a real car.)

The thing I liked best about GTAIV was Niko and his story. I really felt for him and his troubles. Everyone using him all the time, he can't just get some honest work with his annoying cousin. Sure, he's a criminal, but he seems like a guy who didn't have a whole lot off options. He's an immigrant who's only education seems to have been a disastrous stint in the military. All he really knew was how to hurt people; the only clean job he was going to get, was ruined by his stupid cousin getting in with the mob. He's essentially a broken man, and things really only get worse for him as time goes on.

Wish the game was a bit less dull and frustrating, though.

Also whatever, dude, the RC helicopter levels were garbage. Straight garbage. Plus, you know that GTAIV did in fact have girlfriends and street racing, right?

Plus, I gotta say: GTAIV's been out for a while now, and none of your complaints haven't been hit upon in, like, a dozen reviews. You should probably skim Metacritic next time you're making a purchase.
