Guild Wars 2 Console Version?

Earlier this year they announced that Gild Wars 2 would be coming out for consoles but how is this even possible? I mean consoles are more efficient than PCs when it comes to gaming and I do prefer consoles to PCs for most games, but don't think current consoles have the RAM for it. I easily could see it for the Xbox 720 and PS 4, but they announced it for the 360 and PS 3.

Thoughts? Can GW 2 even work as a MMO on the 360 and PS 3 without striping to the point that it's the same game in name only?

That type of game on console? That cannot be good. Just the thought of using a controller for the game makes me shudder with fear...sick.

A lot of people use a controller for Guild Wars 2 for PC, in fact I know a guy who uses a Dualshock 3 and it works pretty good. It's not like WoW where you have a million hot button keys. In fact I think a controller is one of the only +s I can see right now for Guild Wars 2 on consoles.

Oh, interesting. If that is the case THEN DO IT! If it works then no point in not getting out to the console users.

My guess is they will have to massively cut down the number of players in each instance to get the game to fit into 512MB of RAM for the 360 and 256MB for the PS3. I doubt it will truly be massively multiplayer. Kind of like how console Battlefield 3 could only do up to 24 players, while PC Battlefield 3 could do 64 players.

Either that, or as already said, maybe they are going to throw it on next gen systems as a launch title late next year.

Well, DC Universe Online is on PS3, so a full MMO on consoles is easily doable. Same with Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox 360.

Doesn't the PS3 also have that MAG game with 256 simultaneous players in one match? I have no idea how that's doing though.

Yes it does, it's probably dead now tho it's been out a few years, but as far as I know it didn't suffer from too many lag issues or problems. And DC Universe I hear runs pretty good on the PS 3 so I don't know.

The only problem would probably be large groups (24+), but there are ways to accommodate more (scaling back the graphics, making it so only yours and the bosses spell effects show, etc)

From what I've heard the control scheme is already pretty simple (can only have 6 spells at a time) games like Dragon Age has a setup for 6 simultaneous spells, and DA plays fine on consoles.

I'd like to see it come out on consoles, I might buy it if it comes out on 360. (My computer isn't capable of playing GW2)

However another thing to consider is that the xbox live community is downright awful, so I can't say I'm overly fond of the idea of playing an MMO (a genre that is pretty much defined by it's social interactions) with that particular crowd.

Not including the start, select or the PS 3 button there are 14 buttons on the Duleshock 3. There are more buttons than abilities so it's not going to run into problems of abilities vs buttons.

It could work. The game itself isn't as complex as conventional mmo's are concerned. Very few skills to worry about. As far as scale and size are concerned, again it's doable. There will probably be some crazy texture down scaling. It will be the same game, but it will probably look like a blurry mess to me.

The one major downside I can see with this is the fact that the PS3 and Xbox 360 communities will essentially be separate. With the PC version there's no division because it's an open platform and you don't need to worry about proprietary networks like you do with the consoles. I'm not sure this game would have the same kind of appeal to create a large enough community on two separate networks like you'd have on PC.

Actually, there are a number of mods out now that make it work for controller. I haven't done it myself, but apparently the combat is far better on a pad, and menus aren't that bad either.

No worries downscaling is always doable, hell they managed to get the PC nemesis Crysis running just fine on Xbox, you just cut down poly, textures, draw distance, number of people,...

The far bigger problem is getting Microsoft to play along because they want 100% control over all their online stuff and MMOs require high independence to function at all.

IS that why DC Universe isn't on the 360 but is on the PS 3?

Sure. The control scheme is already pretty suited for it. Map controller buttons to the action keys, have one stick move the character and the other rotate the map. The graphics will probably be set to a lower level but the Xbox and PS3 has proved capable of very good graphics (That's opinions based and yes I do think you 'PC graphics are far superior' people are all idiots). Its not like we're going to Dues Ex level graphics here or anything. Also, some people here don't seem to understand how servers work very well...

Meh, MMO's are already dumbed down a lot so they can run on a wider range of systems (they aren't exactly using the crytek 3 engine :p).

They really showed a lot of restraint with the number of moves and how they were done.... so, it should fit pretty well onto a controller. Just might want a keyboard to type :p

this would work perfectly for a standard controller. all you have to keep track of in combat are 8 buttons, not that hard to do.

although targeting would be a bit tricky. i guess L3 or R3 could do that, although those are hard to spam.

It worked ok for Dark/Demon Souls
