I skipped out on pre-ordering and buying it this weekend since I was cleaning up my backlog, but I'll be playing it during it's official release tomorrow. Does anyone know if I buy it today can I go ahead and pre-install/patch it for tomorrow?

Yes I think you can download it if you buy the game off them.

Cool, thanks. How's the server stability? Think it's going to bust a nut tomorrow?

I doubt it. We managed to bring the servers down on the first day of the headstart. It lasted about 5 hours, since then I have heard of a few issues/crashes but nothing major. All in all, it has been one of the smoothest launches I have seen. My biggest concern is that the Trading Post is still not functional. Once that is fixed all the big issues will be out of the way and they can move on to fine tuning/tweeking

I wonder how many people will be starting tomorrow. I'd imagine there'd be a large influx, but then again a lot of people started early and won't be playing 24-7 by tomorrow.

I thought that might be an issue as well, but I read someone on reddit say the following and it makes sense. Most people who were super eager to play the game right away got a pre-purchase and got in on the headstart. The people who are waiting for the full release are not likely waiting to log in right away, and are possibly waiting to see if the game is worth their money. As such, I'd expect to see a nice jump in the first week, and general growth over the first month. I wouldn't expect a game breaking influx at this point. Having said that, if they do manage to break the game, I bet it won't take too long to sort it out after the hiccups this weekend.

Sounds good to me. I'll only be able to play about 3-nights this week, so I'll just have to hope everything goes smoothly in the middle of the week. Rolling a Sylvari Mesmer, can't wait!

Well there's the overflow so if there is queues you're worried about unless you want to do PvP you're set. Actually getting on should be fine as they fixed the day 1 pre release problem quite quickly so hopefully no issues.

While I'll see you when your on then. As an FYI, we have a GW group set up here, and have started a guild in game. Another nice feature for those that don't know, you can join multiple guilds and do not require being on the same server as other members. Of course, if you want to try to be on the main server it's "desolation". There are more details on the groups page for anyone interested. Group is here. Wait, what? Cross server guilds? How does that work?

GW2 locks you to a single home server, which you cannot change without paying a fairly hefty fee. You can, however, guest to any server you have a friend on, and be in a guild on any of those servers. You can only do WvWvW and get the benefits from it for your own home server though.

So you can actually like... jump to other servers? That's kind of neat.

It's... complicated. Here is a basic run-down on guilds.
First, you can join multiple guilds however, you can only talk to one at any given time. You can open your guild tab and choose which guild you represent. This sets who you talk to, what guild tag you display, and possibly where your influence goes.

Influence is something I am not 100% clear on yet, so if someone has more info please share, hell I may not even be using the right term. Anyways, as you quest you gain a resource for your guild that I believe is influence. It can be used by the guild to research different buffs and such, again not sure how much they will affect the game. I believe eventually a guild will be able to purchase a hangout spot. This aspect apears to be affected by server, so if you are not on the guilds main server, you may not benefit.

Next, character names are created game wide, not server wide. As such, you are now a unique snowflake across the entire game and won't have another person ruining your good name from another server. Kind of connected to this, guilds are tied to your account, not your character. This means all your alts will be in the same guild. It is also what allows for cross server guilds and communication. I have tested the mail system, it does not work cross server though. Though possibly through guesting you can move items cross server (not tested yet)

Last thing I will touch on is guesting. Haven't tried it out yet, but a friend on another server can invite you over to play with them. In this way you can PvE with your friends regardless of where you are based as a home server. The only real limitation on your home server is WvW, which you can only ever represent your home server.

I think that covers the main points, like I said I am still figuring out how much of it works.

Thanks for that in-depth write up! Sounds pretty interesting. It seems like they are really trying to make an effort to allow everyone to play with their friends when they want to. That's always been my main issue with MMOs.

I think I must have been one of the few to notice the trend of people saying that every upcoming MMO was going to dominate the industry and be some big innovation. And the reaction on release is always lukewarm at best.
I think you're patting yourself on the back a bit too early, there. Not only are there a really small number of people (just the OP in this thread, really) that are dissatisfied with the game, the general reaction to the game has been farm from lukewarm. It's getting a lot of praise all around - the biggest complaints are for the general launch issues involving bugs and massive amounts of people, but in terms of design and gameplay the response is favorable.

And no, you aren't the only one to notice. People have been pointing it out all over the place ever since the first wave of MMOs started after WoW came out and became popular. Everywhere. All the time. It was even happening with GW2. The only real difference is that the hype for GW2 was bigger than other MMOs so it may have gotten drowned out a bit. But there were still plenty of detractors.

Oh it killed the good majority of my weekend.
I got some time in with two different races, classes and the respective starting areas.
The game felt damn good and the attention to detail did not go missed on my part. The differences in weapon styles is entertaining as all hell. The crafting system feel robust and player friendly. The story lines felt inclusive and gave itself a few points to be responsive.

I loved the way I could stumble into any large battle that is already in full commitment and contribute in some way.

This is weird. Buying it now is still considered pre-ordering. I just bought it and it looks like it's implying I can play it now... so, how is this a pre-order if I can play it now? I figured there'd be a cut-off date for the early access.

To be honest, I'm much more curious on how the game will do 3 months from now.

Most MMOs, even those considered huge failures now, generally had an overall positive response, naturally including a few complaints such as this one. It was only a month or more after launch that the real problems started to become apparent.

I'm keeping somewhat of an eye on GW2 for the coming months, not going to give it too much attention though. It is, at the end of the day, a themepark MMO and comes with all the limitations that that brings.

There is a pre release for those that prepurchase 3 days and 1 day which is today for those that pre order.
